    Was (b) ever an option?

Yes, both Jan Hammer and John Beck seem to have managed it at various times. Now is not the time for cynicism, now is the time for inspiration!

Not really a keytar, but the keyboard of an ARP 2600

And of course it looks even more cool with a purple seetrough shirt

If that is Rick Wakeman on the Keytar, who is playing keyboards at the background?

That's Anderson. He makes his way over there as Rick is donning the Keytar.

    Thanks.

That keytar is pretty ugly, I think I prefer those of Jan Hammer and Roger Powell.

Thanks for these, I think Jan Hammer gets the potential of the Keytar as an instrument in itself, not a novelty. Can't find video but John Beck of it Bites was spectacular when he used to use one with them.

I think Jordan Rudess has the coolest keytar.

I am suitably chastised and hereby apologise for all the negative waves.

Or https://youtu.be/IxHDXs0tTOw?t=142 if you prefer to jump right to where Satan's Keyboard becomes visible.

I remember Geddy Lee being asked, when he was interviewed in Keyboard magazine in 1984, about using one of those portable keyboards. He said he felt most keyboardist who used them looked like they were trying to look like guitarists or something and he felt it wasn't an image he wanted to adopt. I think he said Roger Powell was the only keyboardist he thought looked dignified when he was playing one.
