Rick Wakeman covers I Saw The Light

Rick adding piano, organ and synth solo to the original Rundgren track with the life squeezed out of it. Assuming it's genuine, what is the point? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEY55G2CL6s

Looks like it's streaming on Apple and Spotify so is it a case of easy money for clicks or am I being too cynical?

Its from the Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra label, so maybe it is from one of their all-star "Tribute to" records.

That really adds nothing to the original. Just a fluffy layer of frosting. Can Todd solo over some Six Wives tunes next?

Rundgren's currently on Cleopatra and has done another album of collaborations with other artists (not released yet). Maybe Wakeman's on one of them (they met on Danny Baker's radio show a year ago) and this cover was part of the deal.

I expect most covers not to improve on the original, but I cannot believe how dreadful it sounds.

There's hardly anything of the original track there as far as I can tell. Mainly just the lead vocal. The bass and drums are newly recorded for a start.

When I saw the thread title, I thought this would make an interesting Wakeman cover

Heh! Funnily enough in the radio show I mentioned earlier Rick said his mother was into old-time country music when he was growing up but he couldn't stand it.

^ Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of when I saw the thread title too.

QFT. And the synth solo is a pathetic replacement for Todd's guitar solo.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

You CANNOT replace Todd's guitar solo.

    What the hell was that???
I love Rick Wakeman(and early Todd), but this reminded me of one of those musical pieces musicians made back in the day where they sequenced every musical note on an Atari 1040ST.

Is this a good place to post tracks from Piano Vibrations?

Hey, I worked with an Atari.

Unknown, or at least uncredited. If you haven't heard it, Piano Vibrations was an album of covers that Wakeman played piano on as a session player, that Polydor rereleased as a Wakeman "solo album" after he got all famous.

That's like one of those K-TEL Today's Hits! releases where they re-recorded the songs with different performers.

Speaking of Yes and covers, here's Allegaeon's newly-released version of Roundabout:

I just finally listened to some of this.

    I thought Liberace died.

No. Just no. I am a big fan of creative covers, but this is actually a destructive cover: they took one of the prettiest pieces in the flonkus genre, and made large parts of it, well, ugly.

This is obviously fake. You noticed that, right?
