“Thought something that showed some promise was worth sharing.”

Unless it isn’t something that is actually promising, or useful, or even safe. When you don’t cite a source, you become the source. The spread of misinformation may be as dangerous as the virus. If something comes from a reliable source that can be cited, checked, and judged objectively, it might be worth referencing if it might help some people. Other times, it might just be better to simply refrain from repeating the things we hear.

Sites like that usually regurgitate information posted on other outlets.

Scott, you need one of these to keep your customers at a safe distance.

I fear that human logic (and stupidity) will result in masskilling of bats, without considering for a second how happy the mosquitos and malaria parasites will be.

That seems like a really stupid idea. I have no problem with the destruction of bats in the markets, but where are they getting the other bats? Some sort of bat farms or trapping them in the wild? I don't understand the use of the word "culling" here. That would imply they're killing only a select number of bats. Based on what criteria?

Setting them free is probably enough.

Well I wasn't thinking of live bats, only ones that are dead and ready to be sold (assuming they aren't already cooked). But yes, why not set those free as well? Around here bats are nearly wiped out by white-nose syndrome.

Naah, but the reality of chinese market places is that most of the animals are still alive and get killed at the moment of getting sold to be eaten. This in chinese minds ebnsures the meat is fresh (since it was alive just before you bought it)

Soooooo the promiscuity of all kinds of animals in cages allows for plenty of virus exchanges and inventing new ones every year. Most of the flu comes from that +/- central area in China.

On top of it, another "delicacy" on these same markets is the pangolin (some sort of ant-eating tattoo), which its ground-to-powder scales are also very sought-after in their traditional medecine (cancer treatment), just like most of the rhinos are being killed for their supposedly aphrodesiac horns, etc...

Yeah lets all accuse China and forget about the narrow escapes we had in the recent past from virusus coming from our own bio industry.

We seriously need to rethink our food production and consumption.

We are only as safe as the dumbest people out there.

Today, I took a trip to Costco and saw a great case for why this isolation needs to continue indefinitely:

    1. A couple shopping with their young child. Look, if there are two of you, one should stay home with the kid(s). Do not shop in groups!

    2. People standing in the middle of the aisle talking on the phone. Hey, six feet apart! How can we maintain a safe distance if you're right in the way? You wanna talk? Pull your damned cart into a corner and blab away.

    3. People walking right at you. Really??!! Maintain a safe distance?

    4. A trip to another grocery store showed that they have not given their workers rubber gloves. These people have no choice but to put their own safety at risk so they don't lose their paychecks. You'd think their employer would get them some protections. Perhaps they tried and couldn't find any. But I see them being used at many stores, so that seems unlikely.

Until this society wises up, we are screwed. Let that sink in and stock up; it's gonna be a long ride, folks.
