Thread: COVID-19 Coronavirus Information and Discussion

  1. #1651
My middle daughter who just graduated nursing school told me today they are paying nurses $8,000 a week to work in New York. That's more than doctors make.

    Finally we have a deterrent:

President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of an "injection" of disinfectant into a person infected with the coronavirus as a deterrent to the virus during his daily briefing Thursday.

This is from the BBC today:

‘You may have noticed the streets are quieter in the UK during any trips out of the house, and that is quite literally true. Seismometers used to record earthquakes and volcanic activity also track seismic noise caused by humans - such as traffic and industrial work. That ambient noise has dropped between 20% and 50% in the past five weeks.
‘David Cornwell, a geophysicist at the University of Aberdeen, says some of his seismometers can now pick up natural noises like the wind and the sea - and adds he would be able to record a minor earthquake in Japan because of the reduced noise.’

There’s always a silver lining. The reduction in noise has been the biggest plus for me from the lockdown here in the UK, particularly aircraft noise. I live west of Gatwick and south of Heathrow airports and usually there is constant noise from aircraft engines; not enough of a roar to cause me to look up but an ambient rumble that takes three or four minutes to clear - all day long. The noise from cars and trucks has also been down noticeably (although beginning to pick up now, especially noisy vehicles involved with construction and home improvements).
We walked arm in arm with madness, and every little breeze whispered of the secret love we had for our disease

For an 80-hour week, on a limited contract, no benefits, and of course you have to spend those 80 hours in the epicenter of the pandemic, continuously exposed and without proper protective gear. And live in the most expensive city on the continent.

Still, yes, some nurses are desperate for the cash, or desperate to help, or both. More power to them, and they deserve the hazard pay. IMO, there's not enough money in the world to match the value of a nurse (never mind I've been married to one for 48 years!).

So I wake up this morning to tornado warnings in Pinellas county which thankfully passed without any major activity and I turn on my computer for weather update.
To my surprise I'm reading headlines where our President has wondered aloud in a press conference, if injecting the body with disinfectant can destroy the virus.
I don't care what side of the political spectrum you care to sit, but this is scary stuff.
I was in total disbelief and couldn't help but think this was the mainstream media going after Trump and misquoting him. But after numerous searches this unbelievably seems to be what he spoke.

I couldn't help but think I'm dreaming and this is all just part of a Stanley Kubrick movie, Dr Strangelove.

*I don't consider this a political post since it's suggesting snake oil remedies to destroy Covid19.
The unfortunate thing is some people out there are going to try it and will most likely it will be fatal...sad, so sad!

There's a reason they're referred to as Angels of Mercy.

That’s been noticeable for me too, living under a flight path. The succession of early morning rumbles used to serve as an alarm clock. Now the silence means I’m rushing out of bed 30 minutes late.

In Japan, all residents are to receive a 100,000 yen ($900) hardship handout. The problem is that, in the name of equality and fairness, everyone is receiving the same amount. Yes, even the CEO of Rakuten.

I’d gladly give mine over to younger nurses who aren’t even making $2500 a month but have been placed on the front lines.

So, to any young Japanese nurses who are reading this thread: PM me and we can talk about it.

The tradgedy of losing so much life, it's just beyond belief - never would have believed it 6 months ago. My wife warned me early on and I foolishly discounted her concerns.

I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation of our Angels of Mercy.

Top Cat- glad you did not get hit. We did, on October 19 of last year, in Dallas. My campus lost 7 of 14 buildings and $43 mil worth of destruction, and are only now rebuilding one building that was damaged but not destroyed. Then came the pandemic...

My 42yo step-daughter is beginning nursing school in the fall. Online now.

And yes, Trump did state to consider injecting bleach or sunlight- he was riffing on some data that had been shared earlier and conflated what it meant with what he thought it meant. That was downright scary, and dangerous. I could go on here, but to what meaning? We all know how it is with him. I just feel for the actual scientists there who have to sit and find some way to not contradict him while contradicting him.

Perhaps the stable genius will bring back one of his brilliant ideas - using nuclear detonations to stop the hurricanes.

I'm not surprised at all. In fact it was quite predictable. I also will not be surprised when nothing changes. The emperor's clothes will remain fully visible and he will be effusively complemented on the cut of his jib. It will not be seriously discussed on State TV.

moe..Perhaps I didn't quite express myself as well as I could. Ref the mainstream media, it's no secret, at least to me, the press doesn't like Trump and perhaps that bias is expressed in the way they cover and report on him and his administration.
Which is kind of weird to me, because the truth by itself is often bad enough, so there's really no need to color it.
I try to avoid most of the mainstream media including Fox, because of their bias to the left or the right. The only time I've watched anything on Fox is the last time they hosted the Super Bowl, or sometimes Gordon Ramsey.(great for laughs).

dana, that is fantastic about your step daughter. My wife's family for some reason has generations of nurses, and it truly is a calling because they certainly don't get rich doing what they love.
We went through Irene the hurricane several years ago and had my 93 year old mother(at the time)living with us. Evacuation on the West Coast of Florida and it wasn't fun and we had to deal with her stress, but made it through ok. Had a tornado hit our manufactured home in Mi decades ago when we lived there, but damage was limited to some damaged siding and broken windows.
The South is getting hit hard this spring, and on top of all the stress of living with the shut-down, my heart goes out to those who've lost their homes and loved ones.
Sorry to hear about your campus, it's hard to go through these things because it makes you question how temporary everything is.

mozo, I was very moved my your comment.

buddha..I think your second comment could fit very well in one of your songs as narration.

I see the press (and I mean White House Press Corp, not opinion journos) fact-checking him, quoting him, holding him accountable. That's their job. Have you ever seen a time when the President, or his supporters cried "Fake News!" and then says "And here is why it's fake," and then proceeds to provide evidence that the reporting being opposed was false? Neither have I. They make assertions. They repeat those assertions ad infinitum. Belief and loyalty is the currency of the realm, not facts and evidence.

Regardless of whether you watch Fox News or not, the viewpoint that has been pushed regarding the press has been widely spread by secondary sources. It would be almost impossible to not have heard it in some form. And I'll drop it here. As Mr. Buckley would say, "Carry on."

I felt this way about the press waaaaay before Trump pushed the whole fake news thing. Whether it's covering a Repub or Dem. But I do agree, most of the White House Press do a much better job than the rest of the media.

But back on track, has anyone heard if GA is still going ahead with partial reopening or not?

That's true for both conservatives and liberals I'm afraid. It's what happens when people get their news from Fakebook. It use to be easy to "get the news". There's an awful lot of crap to dig through now. Network news are shills, local news is fluff. Hell, both even cull stories from YT and social media.

I never thought I'd see the day where the Insane Clown Posse are making better decisions than the mayor of Las Vegas or the governor of Georgia.

People are stupid. I went to the store to get a six pack of disinfectant and all they had left was peppermint-flavored. I hate peppermint!!

Last I saw, he was going ahead with his idiocy.

Can he be charged with manslaughter over this when people start dying? Granted, people need to be just as stupid to follow his lead. But, at what point are public officials legally responsible for people following their advice, no matter how demented?

Thanks, I've been trying to divert my energy today by not clicking on any news stories and decided to bang away on my synthesizers making weird noises as an escape away from this surreal experience that's going on.
If people want to make foolish decisions which may result in their becoming a fatality, that's their choice. But if people make foolish decisions which affect others than that is the problem.
They can infect someone else, who may not become sick but carry the virus and pass it on to x and then y and somewhere along the way, an innocent person will lose their life and that makes me both angry and sad.

GA is indeed moving ahead, against wishes of even GA state public health specialists.

Apparently, the present administration has largely chosen a bold path to cut through the red tape, and use their network of contacts to expedite relief for the American People rather than use the old, bureaucratic emergency response system.
I was not sure, sincerely, if this was sarcastic or not. If not, I have no words.

I've *REFUSED* to be on Facebook from the beginning. Not because I'm techno-phobic, because I'm a a tech expert...I could develop Facebook apps. I could see something like Cambridge Analytica happening long before it actually happened. That wasn't a misuse of Facebook. That was using it for its intended purpose.

I would be having a very hard time deciding what substances I should make my family ingest, and how I can probably use light through the skin to heal them, without clear instructions from someone with experience in Real Estate and television.

I also wouldn't have thought of just getting the flu vaccine instead! It took someone with no medical training but who's always just really loved trucks to figure that out.

Me too. My friends talked me into it and I quit a week later. What happened in the past was bad enough, now it is a hub for people protesting the "shut-down" as well as other misinformation that is putting lives at risk. But probably like you, I have issues with FB on many levels and as much as I'd like to participate in the opportunities to network and join great interest groups, access pages that require login etc. I came to the decision I want nothing to do with it. For people that are on FB, that's fine I understand, some need it for business and family and are somewhat stuck. It's a personal choice at this point and I have no criticism of them.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
