Greetings, Scott!

I don't know where these people live who work at home naked. Where I live, it's winter.
Forgive me and residents of Canuckistan if we scoff at your notion of winter. Actually, unless it's way below zero with high winds, our house stays warm enough that I can walk around nekid in the morning when I feed the cats and dogs. My wife, whose thermostat shattered when she turned fifty, often just wears shorts and a t-shirt.Where I live, it's winter.

Shoot me if I have to spend 3-6 hours on conference calls in a workday.
I never claimed to live in the coldest place in the world, but it's colder than where either my wife or I grew up. But heating the house to summer temperatures is expensive, even if my more tropical wife would prefer it. Victims of the economic fury, moreso than the weather. The people who built our old house apparently thought drafty was good and insulation was bad. We wear what we have to and wait for summer to come around again. No one can see or hear us in any season, as my 'antique' computer monitor lacks camera or microphone. A Zoom and Skype free existence for us.
The province said that they would be announcing regions changing levels today. I thought for sure my region was heading into lockdown as that's the next step for us. But we were somehow spared. I think it's because, even though we've seen an increase in cases, the region is really cracking down on stores not complying with the rules, and our hospital capacity is still in pretty good shape. I'm really hoping we can turn things around before we move into lock-down stage.
I went to the dentist on Wednesday and had to drive to mid-town Toronto along one of the major streets, full of shops and restaurants. It was really sad to see so many businesses closed.
That is happening here, too. I have always tried to support local small businesses. It is the small businesses that suffer and drop like flies, while the giant corporations get handouts, and the people have to stand in bread lines. Thanks, Grinch McConnell. It was really sad to see so many businesses closed.
I have to imagine most people don't really care about small businesses given how they act and vote.

The problem I see is that they THINK they're supporting small businesses by trying to keep them open, even if it kills off their customer base. And I have to say that a lot of small business owners think the same way. I really feel bad for retailers. But the reality is that opening too soon is counter-productive. Instead of aiming their anger at those who want to keep things closed for a short while, they should be angry with their government that refuses to help them.

I should clarify that many of these closures were due to the lockdown and not necessarily because they are out of business. But, of course, it's very difficult to tell which businesses were closed for the lockdown and which were closed for good. Many that are closed due to the lockdown will never reopen. Our government was very quick to provide support for employees that lost jobs due to Covid but has also been very slow to assist business owners.
The city of Markham (where I live) came up with a creative solution to help restaurants this month. They negotiated a deal with Skip The Dishes so that there are no service fees charged to restaurants and no delivery fees from Dec. 2 to Jan. 2, to encourage people to order take-out and keep restaurants in business. The city is subsidizing the deal.
My middle daughter Tanya found out this morning she is positive for Covid. She is a nurse at John Hopkins hospital. She doesn't think she got it there since they wear a lot of protective gear. She didn't come over yesterday because she felt like she had a chest cold. She said she has aches and pains but no fever and didn't mention loss of taste. One of her husband's co workers tested positive about two weeks ago so who knows. She is in good shape because she is also a personal trainer.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF STUPID PEOPLE IN LARGE GROUPS!
^ Sorry to hear that. Healing thoughts.

Since the start of the pandemic, PBS fundraisers have only been 1 week, bookended by weekends. Normally, they're almost always 2 weeks, bookended by weekends. I'm guessing it's because with fewer people able to give, it would cost PBS more to run a 2 week fundraiser than what they'd bring in.
In North Dakota, there's such a nursing shortage, they've been allowing asymptomatic nurses to continue working in Covid wards.

My type-A wife is bouncing off the walls as are most of her peers. She works in higher education and let's face it, much of higher ed's employees ancillary duties is figuring out how to make their duties look way harder than they actually are, as well as complaining about what they can't accomplish because of someone else, yadda yadda. They're so occupied with what other persons are occupied with and vice versa. People whose catharsis is inflicting themselves on coworkers are probably slowly eating themselves from the inside out. So, there is a silver lining after all.

Yeah, Ed. Hope your daughter is okay.

Sorry to hear that, but being she has seen plenty of Covid up close, she probably knows that the symptoms don't always manifest in any particular order. I lost taste just when I thought I was getting better. But I did get better. My sister-in-law with asthma got better. My step uncle with COPD got better. I myself have microvascular disease and I didn't have a severe case. As long as she rests and takes care of herself she should be fine. Good luck to her.
