    It Just Got Real

March Madness, so far, without fans and the NBA suspending it's season with Rudy Gobert testing positive and the teams from that game are quarantined.

That's huge money lost and they ain't in business to lose money.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Think of those who provide us with food, health care...........

I wasn't freaking out a few minutes ago. I kinda am now.

ETA: Sorry, but I've got two of three strikes against me. Bad lungs from smoking too much shit over the years and my sis basically deals baccarat only to Chinese men.

Yeah, I'm just starting to worry which I hate to do as shit usually doesn't get too bad, but.....

Indeed. However taking painful and extreme measures now means lives saved and a crisis shortened later. Better a recession than a humanitarian disaster. Over caution in the face of uncertainty would be wise IMO.

Since my mother passed away in January our lives don't revolve around taking care of her, so we can cook and eat when we want. I was going to ask my neighbor if she wanted to have dinner with us tonight since their work schedules don't always coincide. Then I got to thinking she shoots pool two nights a week at crowded bars and she works inside at a steel company. She is also type one diabetic which could lower her resistance to a virus. Her sister has been in and out of the hospital for the past two months with an intestinal problem and she still has to have another procedure done when the infections leave. She has been visiting her in the hospital where my youngest daughter who lives with us works. They just had a case of coronavirus appear at the hospital. I am supposed to see Hackett Sunday night and am starting to have second thoughts about that.

Rudy Gobert and Tom Hanks are patients zero for those of us in the U.S.

Celebrity buys you a lot and in this case it's what happen's to them to inform us about what the hell is actually going on.

I'm in, but I bet this thread gets locked before it gets some traction.

Stay safe, Loony. There are steps and precautions that we can all take to reduce the chances of coming into contact with this virus and/or spreading it. There isn’t reason to panic (and that does nobody any good in this scenario anyway), but caution is definitely a good idea. I’ve postponed my travel plans for business trips to Canada this month, just to be safe.

Also, there’s a lot of misinformation circulating in social media (like Twitter, probably one of the worst offenders). I had to ask a coworker to stop talking to me about it because he was just regurgitating stuff he read without doing any fact checking and was not open to actually discussing it.

After tonight when I go shopping I'm done for weeks. Not going out and am damn scared of my sis, to be honest. If I get infected it will be because of her.

The dilemma of aggressive containment effort vs severly damaging the economy is one which I am happy not to be actually making a decision on. Its a mess , likely to be with us until at least the fall , with a long lasting bitter after taste. Stay safe , be sensible , and cross your fingers. A time for unity rather than acrimony if there ever was one.

It's crazy here. I've only seen a little bit as I don't really go anywhere anyway but the local smoke shop is "open" but they aren't supposed to be. They are keeping the doors locked and only letting in select people like me that they know.

They've shut down the liquor stores and that scares me. A city that is well known for imbibing has little options for alcohol and that might make things scary. Can't say it will happen but the convenience stores and supermarkets can only hold so much.

Having read The Stand when I was in high school many years ago and other TEOTWAKI books/movies I've always felt that Vegas would be the first place to go under from panic. Food doesn't grow naturally here and there's none outside of what few food outlets that are open and the supermarkets and the last time I went there it was freaking empty of most things.

Think about all the meals hotel employees ate at their jobs that now have to be supplied by empty markets. That's thousand of meals a day. School kids now home have to be fed there, also draining what little supplies there are.

The paper said casinos are scheduled to reopen in 22 days. How the frak is that going to happen?

I don't trust my government (never did) to put this right after it ends. I'm more worried about that than the actual virus.

I have never lived in Vegas, but been there many times and some of your exact thoughts passed through my mind when I heard that it had closed down. Vegas, probably more than any other big city I can think of, lives and dies by the service industry and pretty much all of those people don't have incomes right now. As you also mention, everything has to be brought in from outside as well across miles of desert. I guess the one good thing is that the place is already isolated, so maybe the virus won't move in, but with all of the tourists it is probably already there.

Here in Michigan we are under mandatory shut down, although liquor / beer stores are still allowed to stay open. I am still working since my job is considered “essential”, but many people are either working from home or not working at all.

Hang in there and hope it all ends up well.

Last I heard, the entire Nevada state government is funded exclusively by taxes on casino gambling. If casinos remain shut, not a penny is coming into state coffers.

FYI I'm closing this thread as we have a running COVID thread on the forum. You can take the discussion there. Thanks for understanding.
