    Rest in peace.

    RIP

For the longest time I thought his last name was Von Snydow. I remember watching Three Days of the Condor and I thought he was elderly. He was 45. This was a couple of years after he was the elderly priest in the Exorcist.

Three Days Of The Condor is one of the best suspense thrillers I've ever seen. His cool demeanor was perfect for the hit man role. But I found him to be a bit too stoic for the Jesus portrayal which for me was a terminal bore. RIP

My introduction to Max Von Sydow was the early 80's trifecta of Flash Gordon, Strange Brew, and Dreamscape. It was only later that I learned about his earlier career working with Bergman, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Exorcist, etc.

As far as I'm concerned he was the perfect Ming The Merciless, and he was brilliant as Brewmeister Smith in Strange Brew. He has one of my favorite movie lines in the latter: "What in the stink could they be doing in there?!".

Von Sydow's career was highly varied as such (in terms of genre, period and approach), but truth be told he was not an "eclectic" character actor and largely played out repeated tropes of the same register - although often to fabulous effect. His role in 'The Exorcist' stands out, as does most of his work with Bergman and his absolutely fantastic portrayal of the ill-fated (real-life) author in Jan Troell's 'Hamsun'.

    He'll be missed.

He was one of those actors who, just by his presence, would raise the level of any movie he was in.

It seems like he would never 'phone it in', so to speak, even if he was in a less than great movie.
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell

R.I.P. to a terrific actor who I always enjoyed watching.

    R.I.P. Max!

Apart from the obvious like The Seveth Seal he was very much loved for the 2-part movie epic "Utvandrarna" and "Nybyggarna" (The Emingrants and The Settlers), where he portayed the head of a family of poor Swedish farmers that emigrated in the mid 19th century, from Småland, Sweden to the US and settled in Chisago County Minnesota. Very well worth seeing if you are are a fan of Max.

Certainly my own favorite among the man's work (at least, the paltry number of films I've been fortunate enough to see).

Wished he had a bigger role in, Dune.

RIP to one of the greats.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

Never let good music get in the way of making a profit.

For me this was his most memorable role. And yes I too always thought he was much older; more like 65. So when I saw this thread title I couldn't believe he had still been alive all this time. Well RIP. Talented actor.

Even in The Seventh Seal, when he was only 28, he looks far older than his years.

One of the greatest European actors ever. I have a soft spot for his performance on Bergman's The Magician, which I believe is quite an underrated film. RIP.
