I bought a bottle a few months ago, but haven't opened it yet, so I remain an absinthe virgin.

There are many types, its a destilled blend of herbs & spices.
The most important ingrediens is Artemisia absinthium, but usually Foeniculum vulgare, Pimpinella anisum, Artemisia pontica, Hyssopus officinalis are also used.
Sometimes Melissa officinalis, Nutmeg and Mentha is used.

You can make it yourself. Buy some strong alcohol, or Vodka pour it over your own blend - and wait.
Long time use of Artemisia absinthium is said to cause insanity and blindness, and Absinth was forbidden in many countries for many years.
    Pastis was the legal replacement.

Absinthe has been around for centuries, although it was banned for a long time in many european countries. Lately it has been making a comeback.
Cant say I particulary like it.

I love the stuff. ProgDay 2009 or so was my introduction to it (thank you, Josef) and I've been enjoying it there ever since.

Leaving it in the cupboard to see if absinthe makes the heart grow fonder?

If you hung with Josef in the "oughts", you drank absinthe.. I have many a story to relate and a few I cannot remember... I have not partaken in many years though. In fact I still have an unopened bottle of Versinthe Blanche that Josef brought up to me for FMPM 2006.

And, how come all the things you want to experience cause blindness?

It was made legal in the US in the early 2000’s.

I made Absinthe at home in the 80'ties, gave away and exchanged with friends.
It had an uplifting effect, if you were drunk & tired, it made you freshen up again.
My version ~60% tasted a bit like a bitter version of Richard (pastis), but it depended of the season what herbs I had, and from where I got the alcohol.
I distilled partly (time consuming), but also had som access to 99 % factory made alcohol (used at the University).
I once made one version with added small cap mushrooms, but I dont recall it was any different. Psilocybin may not dissolve in water or alcohol I guess.

    Long time ago now...

I probably like Agwa even more than absinthe. Once again, thanks to Josef for introducing me to Agwa. It's mighty hard to find up here in the Boston area. Found it once in a local store years ago and then never again. Even the big liquor stores in the area and New Hampshire don't carry it.

Lots of different absinthe in Czech Republic. One I tried tasted similar to Fireball

I asked Josef to ship me a couple of bottles but they never made it across the border. I knew I was taking that chance when I asked...

    TOTAL WINE SAYS:
We could not find this item at Laurel (Corridor), MD. But we found it at Knoxville, TN.

I checked with Total Wine, too, and got the same notice that they have it in Knoxville. Road trip!

Why is this a "prog" spirit?
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

Just because absinthe is now legally available in the US, it doesn't mean you should buy what's being offered here. It's shit. Go to absinthes.com and import a couple of bottles there. Max US thujone level allowed by law is 10mg/kg IIRC. You can find many brands boasting thujone levels @ 35mg/kg! MUCH better payoff for a drink that is, well, not that fucking tasty.

My personal fave is Amer 72. A palatable recipe with 35mg/kg. https://www.absinthes.com/en/absinth...he-amer-72-p60

And don't be worried about tripping balls. A good absinthe gives you a very lucid buzz, but that's about it. It's an enhancer (right Chris/Firth? That Mahogany Frog set at progday was simply sublime on our absinthe partaking), but be careful, there's a fine line between lucid buzz and flat out shitfaced. That Amer 72 I recommended is 174 proof!!!!

FYI, the tripping/madness story origins come from the fact that pre-ban absinthes contained thujone levels @200+ mg/kg!!!

I just remember all the goth kids wanting it after seeing Johnny Depp prepare it with laudanum in "From Hell".
