I know I will get rocks thrown at me, but seems many writers put the Cowboys in their top 5 in terms of the 2020 draft. It didn't go down as I had envisioned, but I'm very happy with the majority of the picks. Value is an underrated intangible imo, and they seems to have really scored in that area, while filling positions of need. I had two Zoom meetings today, one with the Chancellor of UMass Amherst, and one with the Athletic Director. They both alluded to great uncertainty about football in the fall. The AD is in touch with ADs across the country, including P5 schools who are pushing for some sort of football, but recognize the risks of having large crowds gathering too soon. Playing without fans, and more likely deferring the football season to the spring semester are being discussed, but too many uncertainties still exist to make firm decisions.
I assume the NFL is in a similar bind. Different states may have different mandates, and be in different positions come fall. Additionally, issues of practice time are an issue at the collegiate level, with different communities having different standards for gathering that will impact players being able to return to campus. The same issues may hit the NFL.
Personally, I agree with you that the likelihood of playing in 2020 is in jeopardy at best, and slim at worst. But if college thinks they can get going by February, then the NFL may look at some sort of deferred schedule, and possibly be more open to no-fan games than the colleges are. Still too early to tell, but the discussions are definitely in full swing now.

The NFL can play without fans, as most of the money is in the TV contracts. My guess is that they start the season without fans, and then play it by ear (this is predicated on testing capacity being increased at least tenfold by September).
College football needs fans. I've been hearing rumors about the SEC and maybe Big 12 having seasons, and with fans in some manner. I doubt many of the other conferences will do this, but nobody knows where we'll be, in terms of the virus, in a couple of months (by which time some decision will need to be made either way). The NCAA doesn't actually have much governance authority over college sports. It's really about the conferences. The SEC appears to *really* want to play. Football basically funds their universities.
The teams need fans for revenue. No ticket sales, no concession sales, no on site merchandise sales, no parking fee sales. They will have to do pay per view. The bars will be packed to watch games. Isn't the virus worse when it is cold and indoor stadiums will be like a cruise ship. With no fans there is no home field advantage. Do they pump in screaming fans when the opposing team has the ball on offense. They may as well play all the games at indoor stadiums so the weather isn't a factor.
