He appears on dozens and dozens of great albums. Rest In Peace.

Yep...can't lie, he wasn't a name I immediately recognized but a quick scan of his discography...wow. RIP.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Also, Ephemeral Sun: it's a thing and we like making things that might be your thing: https://ephemeralsun.bandcamp.com
A few:
Towner - Solstice
Rypdal - Whenever I seem to be far away
Eberhard Weber - Yellow Fields
Keith Jarret - Belonging
Oh man. This one hurts. He was virtually omnipresent it seems on so many great ECM recordings, ever since the beginning. I have always enjoyed his unique style of playing, drumming with a sense of emotion, almost poetic and lyrical, free-flowing yet rhythmic.
I can't find the track online to share, but one of my all time favorites is the song Stufen, from the album Freigeweht by Rainer Bruninghaus. Playing now.
RIP Jon
WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.
Yikes, just after Lyle Mays' death as well.
I think I first paid close attention to his drumming on Solstice, which came out in that ECM Touchstones series around 11/12 years ago.
RIP.
I have quite a few of the albums he played on. Right now, it's just a devastating loss of one of the world's great jazz drummers. An important facet of the ECM sound. Rest in peace, Jon.
We're trying to build a monument to show that we were here
It won't be visible through the air
And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973
We have lost a truly stunning musician. NP: Ralph Towner's Solstice
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I gave this one a spin last year, it still sounds good.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF STUPID PEOPLE IN LARGE GROUPS!
Love his playing on Rypdal's Waves, and Descendre, as well as his playing on Towner's Solstice albums. RIP

Wonderful player. RIP
David
Happy with what I have to be happy with.
Damn, that guy did a lot to define what made ECM so good on records w/ Enrico Rava, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Bobo Stenson, Ketil Bjornstad, Keith Jarrett, Arild Andersen, Rainer Bruninghaus and maybe most notably Terje Rypdal to name a few. Had a really good run, but it would have been nice if he'd stuck around to play for a few more years.

Pura Vida!.
There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind. ∞
Duke Ellington.
Rightly or not, in my mind he was kind of the ECM drummer.
RIP, what a great collection he left behind.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.
Never let good music get in the way of making a profit.
I'm only here to reglaze my bathtub.
I noticed this Blow Out album hasn't been released on CD. On track though, Watching Everybody Else, was choosen for the Compendium Records-compilation-album and I really liked that: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Comp...elease/3707805
I've known my share of Norwegian drummers throughout the years and without exception they would all namecheck Christensen as "granddad" of their craft. There were other ubiquitous percussionists in Norway during his age (Espen Rud, Pål Thowsen, Audun Kleive and so on), but not donning Christensen's international stint. He was a major influence on performers like the extremely prolific Paal Nilssen-Love.

A short portrait documentary film about Norwegian jazz drummer Jon Christensen. Filmed in early 2009, as part of studies at the Norwegian Film School.
He was an integral part of the early ECM sound and played in so many great albums. Rest in peace.
