I agree, never heard of him, well I might have heard the name, but even with a loaded gun to my head I could not name a song or album by him..

Wasn't there a Billy Vera and the Beaters? Couldn't tell you what they did if there was, though.

Yes, it's the same guy. He's 75 years old now, according to Wikipedia.

I guess there are no Family Ties fans in PE... Billy Vera's song was used during a key storyline and shot to the top of the charts to #1 because of Family Ties.

This was a pretty massive hit for him:

He also sang the opening theme to The King of Queens:

I am familiar with Vera/Beaters and that sappy song but am unaware of him ever being considered 'somewhat resembling' Phil Collins

I dont' think I knew he had been recording since the late 60's. What i recall reading was that he actually recorded an album in the early 80's, which included At This Moment, but it flopped. Then a few years later, the song was used on a couple episodes of Family Ties, and the hype off that caused the record company to reissue the album, and that song and another one called I Can Take Care of Myself went through the roof suddenly.

I don't know if he still sings, but he writes liner notes for reissues of 50's rock n roll records. I think he did the liner notes for the Little Richard boxset I have. I had to stop making fun of the guy after that.

Billy Vera/Beaters had a bit role in the '80s in a Bruce Willis movie (as the house band or something like that) if I'm remembering correctly. He was on the soundtrack too. Some people I knew a long time ago would play that soundtrack (among others) for social get-togethers and they weren't aware that Vera sang the At This Moment song from Family Ties.

Vera wrote the song "Don't Look Back," a 1966 regional hit for Bostonian garage-rockers The Remains. In 1967, he teamed with soul singer Judy Clay. As America's first racially integrated duo, they had a minor hit with "Storybook Children." He first released "At This Moment" on a small label in 1981. The producer of Family Ties saw his band perform the song at an LA club in late 1985 and the rest is history.

Oh, stop complaining. At least whatsisname has some presence on your side of the pond. Here in the UK, his career was considerably less than stellar. Even Family Ties failed to make much of a dent.

Is the poster of this thread his cousin or something? I've said things about Phil Collins too. - I once wrote a theme song for Howard Stern in the 90's. I was told that Ba-ba-Booey liked it. (whoever that was).

Well, I definitely remembered Billy Vera's brief popularity in the late 80's, and had been reminded about it in recent years, because I have at least a couple CD reissues that he wrote liner notes for. But the clues the OP was giving, there was no way I was gonna be able to guess that one.

The quote, sourced from memory, appeared in a Feb. 1987 issue of Rolling Stone. My first exposure to Vera occurred weeks earlier when his band mimed their hit on an episode of Dancing to the Hits, hosted by Lorenzo Lamas. The deep-voiced announcer (not Lamas) heralded the segment as such: "Up next, soul-pop legend Billy Vera treats us to an in-house performance of the most deserved number-one hit of 1987!"

I think the word "legend" is a bit of a stretch. But then since I dont recognize him or his music... I should probably just shut up. John barnes is probably legendary as well, but I know nothing about him. Maybe I just dont pay enough attention to legends...
