I don't mind these vocals at all. Nice tune.

Have a great weekend, love,

I just gave this band a good listen and they fall into the "not for me" category. Drummer is heavy-handed and too busy, not to mention the wall-to-wall widdly keyboards. Don't care for the vocals. The only thing l hear "Canterbury" about it is the Dave Sinclair organ.
When l finished there was not a composed moment memorable enough to stick, just lots of widdly and too-busy drumming.
I am glad they're out there doing this, though, and l'm always happy to see a new band getting relatively successful. Like Big Big Train and old King Crimson, it's just not to my liking.
I go, and come back, like memories and symptoms.
I go, and come back, forever, evermore.
Part of me remains abandoned in a circle.
Part of me moves on.

Zopp are in the category of like, but not love for me. Good band, though.

"Just know that even if we listen to the same bands, I listen to them BETTER than you" - Gene Meyer
I saw Zopp this summer on a festival in France...great musicians, especially the bass player...as a Canterbury fan I like the parts that remind me Hatfield, Caravan , Egg etc. but I am less enthusiastic about Stevenson's "own" material(Zopp is basically the project of multi-instrumentalist Ryan W. Stevenson)
Dieter Moebius : "Art people like things they don’t understand!"
I still really love Zopp's first album. It makes no difference to me that it sounds like classic Canterbury, I just like the melodies, arrangements, and overall composition. The second one I'm a bit on the fence about. I don't really love the vocals, and I don't think this album was as tightly composed or arranged as the first, but I do like that he's developing a bit more of a signature sound. I'm sticking with him to see what a third studio album will sound like, and I'm also curious what the band sounds like live on this new record. Maybe I'll get some fresh takes on material from the second album.

Dominion has settled in as my #1 album of 2023. A great mix of Egg (the band...) and UK neo-psychedelia, yielding a unique "sound" that transcends both of the obvious reference points. You and Toxicity are two of the most engaging epics I have heard from a new band in several years.
Before the album came out I was worried that vocals might ruin Zopp's compelling Canterbury moves, as heard on the debut. Very happy that my concern was completely misguided. We got something far greater than a Canterbury homage with Dominion.
^^^ Yep. I'm really looking forward to it. I plan to order a copy as soon as our US retailers list it as in stock.
While the instrumental pieces are mostly Egg-like, the longer vocal works draw from more "conventional prog" (if there is such a thing) sources. In particular, some of the vocal lines are reminiscent of Jon Anderson's, melodically and rhythmically though not wrt voice quality.
What we feel we have to solve is why the dregs have not dissolved.
I have to mention here a band from Brighton called Diagonal, that l don't think l have read a word about here, unless l missed a 3 page thread about them. These guys came out of nowhere in 2008 and apparently went back there.
I just thought of them awhile ago and to me they are everything Zopp aspires to be. Here is the opening track from their only album ("Semi-Permeable Men-Brain" is the track).
Not to offend but for my money if Zopp were truly world-class at what they are attempting they would sound like this band. Don't stop listening halfway through.
Of course it is 16 years ago and a world away.

Diagonal has four or five albums. Their second, The Second Mechanism, is my favorite, but I haven't liked much they did after that and only own the first two at this point (in fact, I just sold off their fourth album here a little while ago). They got lots of attention here, but that dropped off, probably as their albums lost touch with what they were doing on those first couple of records.
Other than having a sort or "retro" sound, I don't see a lot of parallels between Zopp and Diagonal musically. Diagonal doesn't really have a Canterbury vibe, and on their first album, they are far more dependent on looser jams and vocals to carry their music. I personally don't find their vocals all that compelling, which is why I prefer the second album which is more instrumentally focused. Zopp is far more intricately composed and has a more overt "symphonic" feel when they aren't doing the Canterbury thing.
I haven't spun either Diagonal album in a while, so maybe I'll run a cross comparison with Zopp. I may feel differently after that, but I would never have compared these two groups, and for my money, Zopp is a more interesting listen, especially their first album, which I find great from start to finish.

Wow, l had no idea. I have never heard a peep about that band. Must have been long ago.
I am going to have to give Zopp another listen. So many people here seem to have a high opinion of them. I don't think l have heard their debut, maybe l'll try that one.

Diagonal is pretty good band. Or at least their album The Second Mechanism is. I haven't been so enthusiastic about their other albums although they all have their moments.
Edit. As Sputnik wrote I also don't hear much connection between Zopp and Diagonal (which I personally prefer).

I kind of get the 'not quite for me' comments. But for me, they are playing a form of almost free form type music that I thought had been long forgotten. Put me in the 'really enjoy hearing them' camp
