By popular demand: new thread for new year!
Anyone seen Theo Ceccaldi live with his brother playing as a duo? Any good? I am considering seeing one of their gigs in France this spring.

Dustman Dilemma - On Second Thought Surprisingly, I heard of this band just yesterday night, on Spacefreak's suggestion. Is it possible that this excellent, French band hasn't been discussed in other threads? I don't have any recollection.
This is their second LP (2018) and it sounds like a terrific blend of Canterbury music (or similar stuff like the Muffins) and Van Der Graaf Generator, with lot of exotic and experimental elements. Sax and clarinet play a prominent role. Great, essential stuff for fans of this kind of music (on the jazzier side of avant/prog)
Bandcamp link here, although I didn't see any "buy" option https://thedustmandilemma.bandcamp.c...second-thought
First album, released in 2012, is also great.
I'm in, listening to Theo Ceccaldi Freaks right now, got a bit of an Art Zoyd vibe going on at the moment.

Rhun offshoot - highly recommended

There is something special about this album in that it also draws some influence from heavy rock/ proto prog

Listening to 'Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat' a lot lately. At times very Rio-ish, altough that term had not been invented for quite a few years.

PoiL : L'ire des papes (2008)
Lost Crowns : Every Night Something Happens (2019)
Henry Cow : In Praise of Learning (1975)
Zamla Mammaz Manna : Schlagerns Mystik / För Äldre Nybegynnare (1978)
Dustman Dilemma: On Second Thought (2018) (Is this avant-prog? Some say so.)

Together with Trout Mask and SM's Volume Two a template for much early RIO, indeed. If you add MacBeth by the Third Ear Band then you're almost at home. Still, all the original Rock-In-Opposition artists had their own deal to bring forth. As much a case of 'mentality' as of sound, I'd say.

What are you thoughts about Schlagerns Mystik / För Äldre Nybegynnare (1978) by Zamla Mammaz Manna? 17 minute epic "Ödet" is brilliant but I am not so sure about other material.

^ Big fan of that one here. GREAT (mostly all-free) improvisations on the Nybegynnare, some truly memorable melodies on Schlagern. Remember, the latter was intended as an exploration into realms of Swedish traditional/historical "pop" as founded in various folk- and dance-forms of music thought to stem as far back as the late 1700s and C.M. Bellman - i.e. the so-called Swedish Ballad Tradition. These are fun, goofy, silly tunes of fine spirit and craft. As for "Ödet", I always felt that the piece outlasts its welcome just a bit.
Of course, their real masterwork was the followup, Familjesprickor/Family Cracks - arguably one of the top-10 Swedish albums of all time (IMHO).

I think it is an overlooked masterpiece. I love it. I love the funny voices. I love the music.
This is the only band for me that took up Zappa's spirit to even further extremes. Lars is a genius. I have been scratching the surface of his huge solo discography recently, and I just can't believe the amount of great music he created.

^ Vendeltid, Andetag and Sola. If you enjoy the Von Zamla releases, these are a must.
Frith namechecked Hollmer one of the "[…] few genuinely genius" musicians he himself had met/known. I for one believe him. Lars H. was all ears, heart and head - in that order. Completely one of a kind.
