Porcupine Tree In Absentia 5.1 + Bonus Tracks/Documentary

Porcupine Tree‘s 2002 album In Absentia will be reissued as a 3CD+blu-ray deluxe edition in February.

The set features three CDs, with the first offering Steven Wilson’s 2017 remaster of the album, the second containing additional finished studio recordings the band made during the period (such as ‘Collapse Intro’, ‘Drown With Me’, ‘Chloroform’, and ‘Meantime’) and the third comprising over 70 minutes of demos recorded in Wilson’s home studio.

The blu-ray is the fourth and final disc. It features the 2003 5.1 surround sound mix (by Elliot Scheiner) as well as the audio from CD 2 in hi-res. This isn’t a blu-ray audio since it also comes with a brand new, almost two-hour documentary directed by Steven Wilson’s longtime visual collaborator Lasse Hoile, which chronicles the making of the album with interviews and archive footage.

The deluxe set is presented as a 100-page hardcover book which features photography by Lasse Hoile, Carl Glover, Richard Barbieri and John Blackford along with sleeve notes and track-by-track commentary by Stephen Humphries, artwork drafts, and handwritten notes and lyrics.

In Absentia deluxe will be released on 21 February 2020 via Kscope. You can pre-order now.

Seems to be redundant if you already have the DVD-A unless you feel the need to repeat the material on CD.

Except that the Blu ray'll be mastered flat unlike the DVD-A which is mastered too loudly as are all of the early DVD-A'S.

No, the DVD-A is PCM (like all true DVD-A's should be) so it's exactly the same audio.

Although both are lossless, the BuRay may be higher resolution. However I'd challenge anyone to actually recognise the difference!

The original DVD-A sounds awesome, so I have no need to update to this version.

It could sound even more awesome, because it has phase issues (some channels are inverted)

Besides, it has been unavailable for quite some time. Some of us are glad that it is reissued.

If I wouldn't already have the DVD-A plus a vinyl copy of IA, I would certainly buy this!
But not for only two unheard songs.

I don't have the Futile EP so I'll spring for this eventually.

"The best cycle of songs the band ever recorded" according to Steven Wilson when interviewed for this deluxe reissue of Porcupine Tree's album In Absentia.

My latest blog review explores the wealth of material in this newly released four disc set, with comparisons to previous editions, which I hope you'll find helpful.

I think this may have shipped because I saw a copy on an illegal download site today. I ordered this from Burning Shed because I only own a promo copy of the album, and I haven't actually heard it much. I'm hoping they do a deluxe Deadwing because I've NEVER heard any of that album.

i've got the original 5.1 disc and its good. Don't need this one.

Also, Deadwing is my least favorite PT recording. I saw the tour too, in Buffalo I think. I don't understand the ear splitting decibels in a small club setting. That made the NEARfest show sound like a lounge! But the album overall I never found satisfying.

I got my copy from Amazon on March 2.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago. Very impressed with this set...the book is fantastic with all of the unused artwork and studio/live shots from the era. And the essay is extremely informative. The remastered album sounds lovely in comparison to the original CD. And I've yet to hear the demos or watch the doc. Fairly expensive but for me at least totally worth it.

Burning Shed shipped it April 25 but they said it’s taking 5-6 weeks for people to receive orders. Probably just the uninsured orders.

So apparently the documentary mentions a certain music festival/showcase in Pennsylvania that "sponsored" their tour in 2001 that allowed them to pay in NYC and be scouted (and eventually signed) to Lava Records.

I love this album but I really don't see me spending £55 + p&p to buy this when all I really want to watch is the documentary...
