New album by me (that dude from Ephemeral Sun)

    Hi folks...

Spent the last year putting together a new album of my own. It's about 74 minutes long and is called "Between the Axiom and the Sigh." It was going to be called "Sad Widdly Cape Gnomes Eat Hot Death" but that was apparently already used (who knew).

I don't really know if it's "prog" or anything, much less "good" or anything. But, it's me doing what I do and at the risk of losing my official Snark membership card...I'm actually really super happy with how it's come together and am pretty excited to share it with anyone who might enjoy it.

I'm still working with James Plotkin to finish the mastering process, but once it's done it'll be on Bandcamp. It'll be on CD too (I don't know why some of you want to get physical with me, but I do not judge). Sorry, no vinyl, cassette, VHS or punch cards this time.

Anyhoo...here are some tracks. Thanks for reading and listening, sorry for the spam

If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Gonna have to listen to this on the big stereo. My phone doesn’t do it justice.

This sounds WAY better than that weak Sad Widdly Cape Gnomes Eat Hot Death album.

Just a short question: on https://battema.bandcamp.com/ there's a link to battema.net which doesn't work. Is it replaced by http://www.ephemeralsun.com/ ?
    Fine melodic stuff b.t.w.

I'm only in for a 8Bit Version on a Calliope Disc!

Oh, yeah...sorry about that! I killed my "official" site a few years ago when I had my happy divorce from Yahoo's services. Pretty much Bandcamp (and to a vastly lesser extent, FB) are my sites now.

Okay, full honesty...I actually DO have a stupid bonkers idiotic idea for a special physical media release for this noise, but I have to do a bit more homework first to see if it's actually feasible or not. It's one of those things that'll either get me a few laughs and "well played, asshole" fistbumps, or just a plain old fist bump straight to my face

I am glad you folks like the tracks thus far...this has been one of the hardest things I've tried to do, but I'm also sincerely happy with the end result. I know it's not going to be most folks' cuppa, and that's cool. But I'm incredibly grateful for anyone who gives it a fair stab.

If anyone's interested...there's some kinda cool/weird instruments buried on this album that I can share from a technical standpoint. For example, a good chunk of The Intrepid is built from tracks using a Polivoks-M pushed through a Retro Mechanical Jekyll + Hyde filter/distortion unit. The Polivoks was an old Soviet-era clone of the Minimoog with a wonderfully grumpy filter growl that was excellent if you could avoid being electrocuted by the keyboard. Mine is a cloned version so it isn't going to shock me to death (apologies to Facelift) but it does retain some of that lovely grit.

As to physical product, those of us with the warped need to touch the music will be happy with burning CD-Rs.

Just give us good PDFs of the back and tray.

    Sure thing!

It might be a slight afterwards thing...the Bandcamp stuff will come slightly before I have all the physical artwork ready, but I think I can make sure that happens

You have me curious... Is it...

    - The whole CD is one "hidden track"?
    - Only streamable via Netflix?
    - Downloaded into a child's toy, activated by pulling a string?
    - Plays as the "hold music" on a special toll free number only members of johnbattema.com can access?
    WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.

All grand ideas. I'm almost proud But I have something specific in mind that has a wonderfully high "yep, f**k you too" quality to it.

Congrats John. Heard the tracks. Quite nice. Looking forward to acquiring and hearing the finished "product"! And see you at Big Ears.

God damn. Every time I play "The Intrepid" it gets better. Is the whole album that good???

*gulp* I sure hope so!!! Gonna be a whole world of regret if I have to sulk back home and revive the Sad Widdly Cape Gnomes project...

Guess I'd better pick a third tune to put online just to be safe...you folks OK if it's a mellower number? Don't want anyone thinking it's all Red Bulls and fuzz boxes...

FWIW...I'm still a little old fashioned about these things. I've been holding back a few of my own favorite pieces because I still like the idea of hearing a whole album for the first time. Some of my favorites feel most "right" in the context of what's around them. Like, the last song is lovely on it's own but for me at least, coming at the end after everything else, it just has a certain added dimension. It's something I've often loved about my favorite albums from other artists, and I guess I kind of hope it'll be a tiny bit similar for a few of you (hopefully!).

I missed this thread somehow, but lots of family drama the last week, but my best friend(wife) is back home after 8 day trip to the great white north(Michigan) to visit her ailing mother(almost lost her).
So I've been out of it mentally and physically or I would've commented.

I personally think 2 songs in a little over 24 hrs is enough. I too like to listen to a new album fresh. I was in after listening to Intrepid, and then today Gliding Leviathans.
I wouldn't do anymore until the album is available for download and please continue holding back because as I said earlier, these 2 songs set the bar pretty high.

So happy for you John, and here you were all quiet like nothing was happening, when all the while you were creating this great album of music.

But that would make me a tease

I'm also really eager (overeager maybe?) to get it out for you folks. I certainly hope the final product is enjoyable for you peeps

And at the risk of being a bit of a broken record: thanks so much for listening and the feedback. It's so awesome and I'm just super grateful.
