Tony Banks / Andy Taylor / Power Station

I've just come across an intriguing newsbit about a "reformation" of the 1985 Duran Duran/Robert Palmer/Chic 'supergroup' The Power Station.

What is intriguing is that it supposedly has one Tony Banks on keyboards, and several sources (including Wikipedia) jumped to the conclusion that it was THE Tony Banks.

I frankly don't see why Tony Banks would have anything to do with it.

There is one funny aspect to this, though. One of the singers on Banks' "Still" album was one Andy Taylor, but that was NOT the Duran Duran guitarist (and backing vocalist).

Now we have the DD Andy Taylor reforming Power Station (since both Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson are dead and John Taylor is busy with Duran Duran, this is with no other original member, and with Michael Des Barres on vocals, who'd toured with them in 1985) with a Tony Banks that is NOT the Genesis keyboardist.

    Or... ?

I see this on Wikipedia, any other source?

A guy on a Duran forum claims he's asked Michael Des Barres about it and it's a bullshit story. Don't know. Seems pretty elaborate with a credible touring line-up (other than Banks, of course), with Pino Palladino on bass and Steve Ferrone on drums. That it's been on Wiki still unchanged over a month after the supposed announcement is strange, too.

Other than Banks being part of it, it doesn't seem that far-fetched to me.

So...a new Power Station. According to Wikipedia, it's going to be Andy Taylor, along with Michael Des Barres (who toured with The Power Station after Robert Palmer quit to resume his solo career) are the only members of the 80's iterations of the band involved. They've got Pino Palladino on bass, though.

Until there is official news on this, I think we can safely assume an overzealous fan had some fun in the Wiki editor.

And don't forget that Duran Duran's drummer was named Roger Taylor and was NOT the Queen drummer....

Wrong links are a common problem on Wiki. I fix them myself sometimes.

We're not even sure HOW wrong that link is.

Is there another keyboard player called Tony Banks ?
(Possibly it would be someone also called Banks but with a different first name and someone got it wrong.)
Is the reunion even happening at all ?

What IS happening is that Andy Taylor is releasing new music under his name and just played his first headline show in 30 years with plans for more touring. This was reported from his press team over the last couple of months:

The great ANDY TAYLOR is finally making a comeback! He has even completed recording a new studio album, has signed to BMG Worldwide for a release to be announced shortly.

“I’m extremely excited to announce that I will be playing my first headline solo show in 30 years this coming November 27th at the 100 Club London in support of my forthcoming new album on BMG records, I will be joined by my great friend Mr Gary Stringer from Reef (& a whole new band) for this very special show.”

To celebrate his forthcoming sold out 100 Club show, Andy Taylor, the songwriter, guitarist and singer behind hits from Duran Duran, The Power Station, Robert Palmer, Rod Stewart, Thunder, The Ting Tings and many more is releasing his first solo track in 20 years ‘Love Or Liberation’.

Written by Andy and Ricky Warwick (Black Star Riders, Thin Lizzy and The Almighty who Andy produced in the ’90s) Love Or Liberation features the lead vocal talent of Reef’s Gary Stringer as well as having Arya Goggin from Welsh top 40 rock group Skindred on Drums and Paul Turner from Jamiroquai's band on bass.

Of the track, Andy says 'I wanted to get some new music out ahead of this month’s upcoming live shows - Love Or Liberation is a perfect statement of intent. I’m a rocker, a guitar child of the 70’s so I wanted to put out a track from my forthcoming album that’s fundamentally about who I am’

Love Or Liberation was produced by Andy and mixed by Mike Fraser who is best known for his work with AC/DC, Aerosmith & The Power Station.

The now sold out 100 Club will be Andy’s first solo show in the capital for thirty years and will showcase tracks from his forthcoming album on BMG, his first since 1990.

Both the show and album feature Gary Stringer as well as a great supporting cast of musicians and with so much great material to dig into Andy will be performing select songs from his previous solo work as well as revisiting the ballsier side of Duran. He’ll be diving into The Power Station & Robert Palmer material and reworking some of the tunes he wrote/played on/or produced for the likes of Rod Stewart, Thunder, The Almighty, Paul Rodgers & of course the odd Reef tune.

Earlier this month he sat in with the band Reef where his singer comes from and they did "Addicted to Love":

And the three musicians in Duran Duran who all have the surname of Taylor (i.e. Andy, John, and Roger) aren't related either.

BTW, talking about Andy Taylor, I remember he played one of the MTV New Year's Eve concerts, and opened his set with a cover of Thin Lizzy's arrangement of Rosalie. Yeah, it's a Bob Seger tune, as that chucklehead Mark Goodman pointed out in the broadcast, but it was clear that Andy didn't know it from whichever Seger record it originally appeared on, but rather, from Live And Dangerous.

I also remember he had a song on the second Miami Vice soundtrack album, called When The Rain Comes Down, which I always thought was a cool song.

From what I gather, though, everything got watered down on his first solo record Thunder. I've never actually heard the album, myself though, but I've heard a lot of peopel say they were really disappointed with it.

I always thought DD should have Ben named Tynker Taylor.

John Taylor is a seriously underrated bassist.

IMO, Duran Duran were a seriously underrated band (at least by some). Sure, they caught lightning in a bottle with their made-for-MTV look, but there was substance to the writing, as well as estimable chops.

The episode of Miami Vice where The Power Station does a cameo as a bar band is among my favorites of that show.

Happy with what I have to be happy with.
