    62nd Grammy Nominees

The 62nd Annual Recording Academy / GRAMMYs Award Nominees have been announced. Okay, there's pretty much nobody I'd consider progressive except for maybe Rodrigo Y Gabriela and maybe David Arkenstone, at least in his roots. But there are many Echoes artists there including Lana Del Rey for best album and song for her CD of the Month Norman Fucking Rockwell. (Can I say that here? Sure can't on the air.) See the Grammy's through Echoes eyes here, https://wp.me/p4ZE0X-gS9

I ran down the list, and found few intersections with my own listening interests. One record that I actually bought (by I’m With Her). Immense number of artists that I’ve never heard, or even heard of.

My progression toward mainstream irrelevance continues apace.

Tool is nominated for a few things. I consider them prog metal, especially their new album, but I know not everyone agrees with that. The pickings are pretty slim other than that although I do like to see that Rival Sons, Gary Clarke Jr. and Larkin Poe all got nominations. All 3 are great bands / artists that I have seen live and deserve their nominations. Kingfish is a great young blues prodigy too who is nominated.

Tycho nominated for best Electronic album for Weather. Their earlier music is semi proggy/ ambient / electronic.

They still do that grammy thing? I haven't paid attention in many years. Whenever I hear something I like, it usually turns out to be someone relatively unknown. Whenever I hear something I dislike, it turns out to be something super popular like Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga, or Charlie Puth or some such.

I saw the list and thought it was utterly useless and meaningless. Who cares?

Logged in to PE, it said "2112 people viewing" -- anyway here's a track from an album nominated in the World Music category:

As always, the jazz and classical categories have some acts who might appeal to prog fans: Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Kronos Quarter, Jennifer Higdon. Thom Yorke gets a lot of nominations. And this nominee looks great: Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990:

Since Lizzo is going to win a bunch of trophies, I suppose I should listen to at least her popular tracks to get an idea of where popular music is in 2019. I've already familiarized myself with Billie Eilish and it's...interesting?

Lil Nas X is my favorite. Coincidentally, the little bottle of Nas-X is my favorite nasal spray.

I really only pay attention to the jazz and classical categories. The only rock or pop oriented category I was interested is Best Rock Instrumental, and they dropped that some years back.

I remember getting in an argument with someone at work, who couldn't understand why I wasn't interested in the Grammys. "Oh, but it's music, that's your thing" and I'm like, "No, it's mostly mainstream music, which I haven't been interested in, in over a decade". People don't get that there's more to "music" than the Billboard Hot 100, and some of us are largely only interested in music that isn't on the Hot 100.

They've been advertising it all week on the idiot box. If the commercial is supposed to bring viewers, it failed to entice me. I can usually find an excuse to watch, but not this year.

Uh, just this side of the gutter?

    Lizzo's hit's lyrics-

Why men great 'til they gotta be great?
    Woo
I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100% that bitch
    Even when I'm crying crazy
Yeah, I got boy problems, that's the human in me
Bling bling, then I solve 'em, that's the goddess in me
You coulda had a bad bitch, non-committal
Help you with your career just a little
You're 'posed to hold me down, but you're holding me back
And that's the sound of me not calling you back
Why men great 'til they gotta be great?
Don't text me, tell it straight to my face

Pulling for Rodrigo y Gabriela for their new album Mettavolution with the killer acoustic version of "Echoes", but that's about it.

P.S. They won for Best Contemporary Instrumental album! Good for them!

Just listened to that album. Nice stuff.

Other prog-adjacent wins included Thom Yorke, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Kronos Quartet, Higdon.

What, no Thieves' Kitchen for "Genius Loci" in the best new Melodic Prog category?

Man, that show was like a documentary of an alien invasion. At one point, they focused on Bonnie Raitt and Keith Urban grooving to rap music. What?!??? There must have been a gun pointed at them.

Good news! You were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)
