    Top five for 2019

What are your top five of the year?

    Thieves' Kitchen - Genius Loci
    Thank You Scientist- Terraformer
    Richard Henshall - The Cocoon
    Marco Minnemann - My Sister
The Psychedelic Ensemble - Mother's Rhymes

Also, are your 2019 top five better than your top five of 1979?

  2. #2
I like My Sister so much. I can't tell why. I am getting this good, kind hearted energy from Marco's music.

    Ikarus - Mosaicmic
    Akku Quintet - Depart

Probably because it's a killer album. If you haven't check out his other 16? releases. They are all good. Broken Orange is one of my faves.

Too much time remaining in the year for this one.
I still need(!) to order some cd's of recently released material that May be contenders.
Not to be picky, but save this thread for 2020.

What are you waiting on that will be released in less than 51 days to make a decision?

Not to be picky, but should this thread be released in June of 2020 to give you time to listen and rate the CD's you ordered?

Perhaps he merely pointed to the fact that the year isn't over just yet.

It's fun starting these threads early as long as you don't take them too seriously, to me its just starting the discussion. Didn't we have one of these start in July one year?

Thanks, Captain Obvious. You crapped on my Marco Minnemann thread, please don't do it again.

Yes, they usually do. There's also the running annual "best of...so far" thread. Arguably, the OP's post could have fit right in there.

This may come as a shock...but I still have several albums from 2019 to get to before I'd be satisfied calling this a final list (I know...right?).

    1. Jordsjø - Nattfiolen
    2. Motorpsycho - The Crucible
    3. Ghost Rhythms - Live at Yoshiwara
    4. Elephant9 / Reine Fiske - Psychedelic Backfire II
    5. Ikarus - Mosaismic

My 1979 list would probably look like this (too hard to keep to 5):

    1. Pink Floyd - The Wall
    2. Atlas - Blå Vardag
    3. Flame Dream - Elements
    4. Bill Bruford - One of a Kind
    5. Flaming Bess - Tanz Der Gotter
    6. Heldon - Stand By
    7. Alameda - Alameda
    8. Kansas - Monolith
    9. Ganelin Trio - Catalogue: Live in East Germany
    10. Oriental Wind - Zikir

In the end, I don't think 2019 was all that strong of a year musically.

I have not bought too much brand new stuff, but "Terraformer" would definitely be in my top 5.

I'll take my 79 list over my 19 list

    '79
    Henry Cow - Western Culture
    Univers Zero - Heresie
Aksak Maboul - Un Peu de l'Ame des Bandits
Art Zoyd - Musique Pour L'Odyssee
    Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure
    Art Bears - Winter Songs
    Motorhead - Overkill
    AC/DC - Highway To Hell

At this moment, my top five for 2019:

Ghost Rhythms - Live at Yoshiwara
    Stratus Luna- Stratus Luna
    Chon - Chon
    Evades, Les - Black Mamba

#5 is still a toss-up between these three:

    Mercury Tree - Spidermilk
    Mythopoeic Mind - Mythopoetry
    Panzerpappa - Summarisk Suite

Still waiting to see if Unit Wail releases something this year, that may change things.

    My 1979 top 5:

Hackett - Spectral Mornings (his best, imo)
Bruford - One of a Kind
    Atlas - Bla Vardag
Dixie Dregs - Night of the Living Dregs
Tie: Mezquita - Recuerdos De Mi Terra and Crack - Si Todo Hiciera (take your pick, both awesome)

    3. Pekka Pohjola: Visitation (FI)
    4. Terje Rypdal / Miroslav Vitous / Jack DeJohnette: s/t (NO/CS/US)

Now let's have a huge, autistic quarrel about the SIMPLE fact that Henry Cow's Western Culture is a 1978 album.

    1979:
    Motorhead - Overkill
Stormy Six - La Macchina Maccheronica
Aksak Maboul - UN peu de l'ame...
    Igra Staklenih PErli - same
Armes et Cycles - Albert Marcoeur

2019 so far (and mainly prog)

    Poil - Sus
Jack O' the Clock - Witness
    OCtober Equus - Presagios
    Thieves Kitchen - Genius Loci
Lost Crowns - I don't remember the title at the moment

I take the past, because everything that has already happened is by definition better than everything that happens at the moment or will happen.

    1979
    Robert Fripp - exposure
    henry Cow- Western culture
    This Heat - s/t
    Univers Zero - Heresie
Stormy Six - La Macchina Maccheronica

    2019
Lost Crowns - Every night something happens
    Yazz Ahmed - Polyhymnia
Ghost Rhythms - Live at yoshiwara
    October Equus - Presagio
Isildurs Bane & Peter hammill - In Amazonia

For me the most exiting music is the music that is being made right now so I choose 2019

For being the "end of prog", 1979 was a pretty decent year. In no particular order, and yes, more than 5:
FZ: Sleep Dirt and Sheik Yerbouti, Joes Garage I-III
    Kansas: Monolith
    Bruford: One of a Kind
    Hackett: Spectral Mornings
    Tull: Stormwatch
    Saga: Images at Twilight
    Utopia: Adventures in Utopia

I haven't heard too many 2019 releases, this is all I have for now (again, in no particular order):
    Thieves Kitchen - Genius Loci
Steve Hackett - Edge of Light
Big Big Train - Grand Tour
Kaprekar's Constant - Depth of Field

It wasn't the end of anything. "Progressive" developments in rock music by then had become far too challenging and demanding for a general public, while the "bigs/dinos" had resorted to mediocre renditions of zeitgeist in order to endure and survive, commercially speaking.

    1979:
    Univers Zero - Heresie
Vortex - Les Cycles de Thanatos
Stormy Six - La Macchina Maccheronica
    Art Bears - Winter Songs
Aqsak Maboul - Un Peu de l'Âme des Bandits

These albums - all of them - contained music which simply couldn't have been created and/or released by earlier bands. They were of their own time, not indebted to what some others did five years previously. There were plenty more ravishingly original titles from that year, particularly from France, Canada, the US, Eastern and Northern Europe.

    2019:
    PoiL - Sus
Lost Crowns - Every Night Something Happens
    The Red Kite - (same)
    Trojka - Tre Ut
    Deathprod - Occulting Disc

A bit heavy on the Norwegian side maybe, and certainly not as temporally singular as anything released in '79. Granted there are a number of this year's albums I haven't got around to yet, these are the ones I've spent the most time with.

This list reminds me just how deep 1979 was. None of these made my personal top 10, but some would have for 2019. And there's several very high quality albums not mentioned yet.

^ I am surprised with your love for Trojka, which I liked but didn't find that exceptional. I will revisit.

You need to listen to the Thieves Kitchen. This is as good as it gets on the more symphonic/melodic spectrum of rock music.
