Manfred had nothing to do with Timeless other than releasing it. He didn't produce it as in 'being in the studio while it was created' produce it. He produced it as in 'he paid for it so he gets a producer's credit'.
It was recorded independently, as sometimes the early releases were.

Any time any one speaks to me about any musical project, the one absolute given is "it will not make big money". [tip of the hat to HK]

ME not being present during recording doesn’t mean he didn’t have a preliminary discussion with the others about how he wanted the album to sound etc. Then again it may be as you suggest, but credits don’t always tell the full story and exact nature of Eicher’s contribution...
On the topic of ECM albums not produced by Eicher, I was a bit surprised reading Gary Burton's autobio where he claimed he, not Manfred, produced Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life.
at that early stage in ECM's history, and ME being in Germany and the album recorded in NY, AND it being the first ECM by Abercrombie, as well as including people untypical of ECM (Jan Hammer?) as well as a very early appearance (2nd? 3rd?) by Jack DeJohnette on ECM, I am going to venture a GUESS and guess that it was recorded completely independently of ECM and pitched and sold to ECM/Manfred and then mixed by Jan Erik for ECM.
guess guess guess. Dunno Dunno Dunno. But not unlikely, imo.

There is an interview online with JEK from Tape Op magazine where I believe he said Afric Pepperbird was his first ECM project.
Among my favourites : the Azymuth records he did all from memory, btw there is a nice 3CD set with all (or nearly) their recordings
