I thought Bananas was great! Just a bit different.

Well, it's the first album with Don Airey. It's also a very loud, compressed and limited album. The songs are good on it, though. I like it better than Rapture of the Deep.

I'd have to go back and listen to it again. It's been a few years since I've had Bananas on. But I remember it being a bit of a departure from some of the other Morse albums. Sorry, I'm not more specific. I might go play it now and change my mind about that. I never had the CD so I don't know how that compares with the vinyl in terms of compression. I always thought the vinyl was fine.

IMO, "Bananas" is the worst DP studio album. I reach for it every so often to see if I change my mind about it, but I strongly dislike it.
Rainbow has DP and Yes beat in the personnel changes dept. 4 fold.

Bananas: The title and the cover instantly tell you this album is going to be about having fun. Don Airey is attempting to fill Jon Lord's keyboard slot-no easy task,so why make the music difficult? I think it's a fine Deep Purple album myself. It surely isn't the WORST in my book, that dubious honor goes to Slaves and Masters. No huge JLT fan to begin with, but the songs are just pure dreck. Blackmore is totally uninspired on this and I am so thankful I only have it on factory cassette. Having said that about Bananas I can't fathom someone liking it more than Rapture Of The Deep. I just heard that the other day and was very impressed by the songs. Their strongest material in years I think. I ended up getting the 2 disc version. Look, they're never going to make another Machine Head or In Rock. I think people place way too many expectations on these guys and then they are disappointed. If you don't expect, you don't get the disappointment in such a large dose. I also had no idea Bananas was brickwalled in sound until now. I will have to give it a listen soon. I just thought it rocked. lol

In the category of "different strokes," I think "The Cut Runs Deep" and "Wicked Ways" beat anything on "Rapture of the Deep," an album which is crappily produced and sounds REALLY tired to me.

That said.. that sample sounds promising, so I'm looking forward to this.

The sample sounds like ELP if ELP were still going and were quite good

It's good, but not one of the best IMO. There are no big things in Purpendicular. Nothing to compare with Burn, Highway Star, No No No etc.

I would agree, I know Gillan's a talented comedian. Their stage behaviour has changed after RB departure. They seemed to hate RB for some unknown reason, though still doing his songs. DP is not unique in this way - same happened to Heep, Grand Funk, Slade, TYA - they all play the songs of their former lead authors. Here we have "nothing personal, only business' sort of thing))

"Ian: This looks actually perfect. I mean it's, uh, the right proportions.
    It'll be this color right?
    Artist: Yeah.
Ian: Yeah. That's...that's...that's just terrific. It almost looks
    like the real thing.
    Artist: Well good.
Ian: When we get the actual, uh, set. When we get the piece, it'll...
it'll follow exactly these specifications. I mean even these
    contours and everything?
Artist: Um, I'm not understanding it. What do you mean "the actual
    piece?"
Ian: Well I mean...I mean when you build the actual piece.
Artist: But this is what you asked for isn't it?
    Ian: What?
Artist: Well this is the piece.
    Ian: This is the piece?
    Artist: Yes.
Ian: Are you telling me that this is it? This is scenery? Have you ever
    been to Stonehenge?
    Artist: No.
Ian: The triptychs...the triptychs are twenty feet high. You can stand
    four men up them!
Artist: Ian, I was...I was...I was supposed to build it eighteen inches
    high.
Ian: This is insane. This isn't a piece of scenery.
Artist: Look, look, look. This is what I was asked to build. Eighteen
inches. Right here, it specified eighteen inches. I was given
    this napkin, I mean...
Ian: Forget this! Fuck the napkin!!!"
