Sorry, but this means absolutely nothing.
Someone posted a photo of the 3 Shulman brothers who recently had a family reunion, and in the comments someone wrote about a "30 CD live box set", but there's no indication that this is really happening, or is there ?

The photo was on the official Gentle Giant Facebook page, so the "someone" who wrote the caption (not a comment) was presumably Lesley Minnear (Kerry's wife), who administers the page and also handles GG business.

I'm inclined to agree - but we never know who really triddles the knobs on those pages - unless you are indeed correct that its Lesley. I hope its true... I'd love to hear more - more more more!

I'm okay with 30 discs as long as the price isn't too high and the contents are worthwhile. But, personally, I am not a fan of the live tracks that have been included on some of the remasters. If it's more stuff along those lines I will be on the fence about this. For me, the studio sound is a big piece of the puzzle when it comes to GG.

I can't find the comment right now (has it been deleted ?), but the photo came with no comment except "three brothers", and was posted by Noah Shulman (not sure who this is, maybe Phil's grandson ?), and I don't remember the comment referring to the box set being made by anyone with the surname Minnear or Shulman !

No doubt the picture has been posted more than once on FB; I was referring to the one that appears on Gentle Giant's own page. Noah Shulman is Derek's son.

Edit: I see the confusion: there are two Gentle Giant pages on FB. Noah Shulman posted "Three brothers" on the fan group, and "Gentle Giant" (Lesley Minnear) subsequently posted it on the official band page with the caption "The 3 Shulman brothers August 22nd 2019.
Discussing the release of ‘Unburied Treasure’ the limited 30CD live Box Set being released at the end of October on Snapper Records maybe?"

I would be shocked if there are even 3 CD's of unreleased live material worth publishing. Other than the official stuff, every boot I've heard is pretty miserable quality.

plus, Gentle Giant's setlist never really varied all that much throughout their whole touring career. several constants from period to period

Hearing GG live for the first time--on the Playing the Foole in Wonderland boot in 1975--was a revelation. (Or was the "In Concert" TV appearance before that?) Seeing them in the flesh for the first time a couple of months later was mind-blowing. The official live double LP was great. The live reimaginings of their repertoire were consistently amazing: no one else this side of Zappa would craft such complex and detailed arrangements in the studio, and then treat the same material to equally complex and detailed, but completely different, arrangements onstage. But with the music being so tightly arranged, there was not a lot of variation from show to show. And with the large number of archival releases that have come out over the years, especially all those kinda dodgy official bootlegs on the Glass House label, I can't help but feel glutted with live GG. It's hard to work up enthusiasm for 30 discs of what will surely be more of the same.

agreed that the Minnear fear re-arrangements are all inspired and very cool. they really are alternate versions and I love them.

when they returned for the shortish touring for Civilian their set was taught and more rock as any, but previous to that, a lot of setlist sameness

it seems that they would do a concentrate on the new LP, but that they also did a lot of song dropping as their tours moved on. again, and as you said, they weren't exactly "jamming" and had a arranged and rehearsed show to execute . several standbys throughout the touring career

I've got all of the 'official' boots from the last several years and all of the boxes etc . . . . not sure anything but my Collector Scum mentality will make me by this. and it probably will lol

Weren't some of the official bootlegs just audience recordings? There is the KBFH show, but if they have a secret stash of board recordings that could be interesting for fans, but 30 cds of audience records would not.

A secret stash of board recordings would be interesting, but as others have pointed out, their performances by necessity were highly similar within a tour and rather significantly from tour to tour. I suppose there might be a few rarities from their recorded live repertoire, but they would most probably be from very early or very late and in the former case probably of dubius quality.

I'm pretty certain that this set will indeed contain audience recordings, as well as shows that have already been released as official bootlegs. A while back Snapper sent out a request for memorabilia from the following shows, so they are presumably to be included:

    DUSSELDORF 1971
    ESSEN 1972
    NEW ORLEANS 1972
    HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1972
    VICENZA 1973
TORINO 1973 (= In a Palesport boot, also included on Scraping the Barrel)
    MUNSTER 1974 (= Prologue boot)
CLEVELAND 1975 (= Playing the Cleveland boot)
    BASEL 1975
    CHESTER 1977

I'm betting those 30 CDs include all the studio albums. Also, I'm wondering if the number is wrong. It's been put out there that it was to be a 20 disc box.

whether it's 20 or 30 CD's means the same to me...I wont be buying it! I consider myself to be the #1 GG fan, others will disagree...I have everything I will ever need from Gentle Giant. No amount of rehashed or recycled recordings will ever make their music any better to me.

Hard to imagine there could be 30 CDs worth of music worth releasing from a band who have already done a boxed set titled Scraping The Barrel...

That's very true, however, Scraping the Barrel was put out by Dan Bornemark, not a band release..I just look at it as Gentle Gouging, and not exclusive to GG.

What about the Playing the Fool remix, you'll invest in that right?

Those 20-30 CD boxed sets that seem to be in fashion typically include the band's entire album discography, so in GG's case that's 11 studio albums + one double-live released during the band's lifetime. That would leave "only" 17 more CDs, and a good 7 of those could include the already released BBC / soundboard quality performances and/or rehearsals. That leaves about 10 CDs tops. Is there a recently discovered cache of previously undocumented road tapes ?

Hopefully there is no question of include those horrible bootlegs that were given a semi-official release in the 1990s, these deserve to remain bootlegs.

One recording that is known to exist and would be worth releasing in its entirety is of course the September 1972 New Orleans show, of which only a very good sounding "Prologue" has so far been released. This is a priceless document of the late Phil Shulman era (it sounds MUCH better than the King Alfred's College release from 1971). Hopefully there are a few others that have been kept under wraps till now.

Yup, even including the filmed concert footage on DVDs, you wouldn't amount to 30 discs (whether audio or video)

I'd pass on nthis boxset anyways.

I'm affraid I have to let this one pass as well. As much as I love Gentle Giant, I don't think I want to buy everything I own for a second time.
That's a big problem with several groups I love. At some point in time, I've got every studio-album and at that moment they decide to put out a box-set with all studio-albums and perhaps one, or two CD's with unreleased bonus stuff.
