My comments to progfan915 on Wednesday got me to thinking. I've been absolutely geeking-out over some of the stuff John Battema introduced me to three weeks ago right here, although my wife calls it "weird" and my best friend said, "Is that supposed to be music?"

Why yes! Yes, it *is* weird and yes, it *is* music.

I long-ago realized that A.) my tastes run toward the weird and B.) it takes a lot of exposure to a whole lot of different kinds of music to appreciate some music, which is maybe too subtle or too varied or too international or too complex or too unhummable to be appreciated by those with less exposure to music. Today's pop-culture is just as vapid as pop-culture has always been, but I've been buoyed by finding a lot of really interesting music on Bandcamp and at Cuneiform and ReR and elsewhere, so I know there are other weirdos out there who like the same kind of off-the-wall experiments as me.

So here's the challenge. Post some really challenging music, stuff that is so "evolved" that you can only listen to it in the car with the windows rolled up.

I'll go first.

Just listen. Don’t categorize. IMO.

A few interesting ideas there, but I find the "radio transmission coming in and out" trick a bit numbing after a few minutes.

As a jazz player I still have a soft spot for most of Zorn's projects (though I wouldn't call him "underexposed" of course) ....

Most challenging is tough...I tend to just be entranced with certain textures and approaches more than anything...and there's so much amazing atmospheric/ambient/experimental happening every day.

(^^ saw her live about a year ago and god DAMN. Incredible, visceral, powerful solo performance)

One that just actually appeared on my radar this morning is Jenna Sutela's "Nimiia Vibié" which has my ears perking up on first listen (although full honesty, I may ultimately be more entranced with how she went about making the album than the final result). She isn't on Bandcamp yet, as far as I can see...but you can hear samples here:

BTW...along with Cuneiform/Wayside and the various Bandcamp Daily emails/recommendations, Boomkat is one of my favorite sources for interesting new stuff. They cast a wide net but there have been many gems uncovered for me. In fact, I'm just now starting to explore Roland Kayn's massive electronic works thanks to them.

I find it more rewarding to listen to Rice Krispies, though, in honor of a certain recently-banned member, I'll add that Cocoa Krispies are just as good.
