13 CD Gong Box Set September 2019

Pretty cool set from Gong's 1973-1975 era:

13 CD / 127 Track box set celebrating the Virgin Years with over 75% of rare and previously unreleased content. Remastered for the very first time from the original Virgin masters by original producer Simon Heyworth and Mike Howlett from the band and curated by Steve Hillage.

The First 4 Studio Albums plus Bonus Tracks

The complete John Peel sessions from BBC Radio One from 1973 and 1974

2 songs performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1973

2CDs recorded live at The Bataclan, Paris in 1973

2CDs recorded live at Club Arc En Ciel, Roanne in 1973

1CD recorded live at the infamous free concert in Hyde Park, London in 1974

2CDs recorded live at the London Marquee Club to promote the release of ‘Shamal’ and also Steve Hillage’s debut solo LP, ‘Fish Rising’. Includes the Previously Unreleased Quad mixes of ‘You’ using the Pye and Westlake mixes. Notes by Jonny Greene of the Gong Appreciation Society and artwork containg rare and previously unseen work by Daevid Allen.

Includes the previously unreleased quadrophonic Pye and Westlake Studio mixes of You.

Notes by Gong archivist Jonny Greene of the Gong Appreciation Society and artwork including rare and previously unseen art work by Daevid Allen.

Also contains 64-page illustrated lyric booklet that includes Angel’s Egg’s famously quirky and informative Blue Book and a new companion to Flying Teapot Green Book.

Wow this looks great. Were there 2 different shows at the Bataclan in 1973? The setlist looks different than the French Mantra Records release although that is only a single CD.

I wonder if they'll also release something like The Virgin Years 1976 - 1978... (yeah, I'm more into their jazzrock work).
There are some live-tapes featuring Holdsworth that could do well with a re-mix/master.

Why do you assume that ?
I don't know of any from the "Gazeuse !" era. Do you ?
The only one I can think of is the complete London 2/1979 concert but as far as I'm aware Holdsworth only played on one track, a board mix of which was released as part of the recent Gong Expresso crowfunding.

There's a show recorded in Nancy, France, October 25th 1976 and there are a few tracks recorded during The Reading Festival, August 26th 1976.

Sure, I think there's at least one more, but they're audience recordings, no chance of them being 'remixed' !

I took that to mean "The first 4 studio albums on Virgin", since this is "The Virgin Years 1973-5"

I thought Camembert Electrique was on a Virgin imprint, sure I have a copy on Caroline records that was part of the Virgin group. I may be mistaken. It would have bee; great if this could have been included too.

Looks a great set thought, I’ll be pre-ordering through the Planet Gong Bazaar.

Although originally released on BYG, it was reissued on both Virgin and Caroline in the mid-70s.

Oké, thanks. I was only dreaming I guess.

Here's some of the Reading-stuff with Holdsworth which makes Calyx' statement clear:

    And one from Nancy:

I guess this one isn't in the BBC-archive anymore (if it ever was):

[April 11 1978] Appear on BBC TV's "Old Grey Whistle Test" programme [with Mick Taylor and Allan Holdsworth]

Yes, it is - but with Darryl Way rather than Holdsworth/Taylor augmenting the core line-up.

Any rumours about the possibility of releasing stand alone versions of the studio cds?

I love Gong. This looks like a great set. I bemoan the tendency these day for every band to release a c. £100 box set including a lot of material we all already have rather than just releasing any new archival material separately... but I understand why they do it.

Before my time but I think Caroline's issue of Camembert Electrique was a budget-priced release (a la ELP's Pictures..., Genesis Live...etc., this was popular at the time).

I bloody hope there is....at least Flying Teapot. Those recent Tangerine Dream remasters came out separately so maybe there's hope.

Very much in my time. My copy of Camembert cost 55 pence from Virgin Records' Brighton store. I remember that they had quite a big promotion for the album and that at the same time as buying it I also bought a php tee shirt which I wore proudly to Gong gigs for years thereafter.

As much as I love Gong, I simply cannot afford spending 100 pounds in a set like this. I sincerely hope to have standalone versions of the studio albums, at least, or even of some of the live material.

Is there a definitive reissue of CE at all?

Better get confirmation that the studio albums are indeed better (remains to be heard) than the previous mix/masters, and one would have to see if the artworks of the stand-alones would be as splendid as to what the Victor label stupendously did on those japanese mini-lp: the TD stand-alones are just OK (just normal jewel cases) with this but nothing to write home about.

But my interest would be more for stand-alone live stuff, but so far the un-released TD live stuff from the boset is not available as stand-alone (at least to my knowledge), so little chance of that happening (not holding my breath, anyways)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from heroin-addicts to crazy ones
