Thread: Bruford 1979 WLIR broadcast

    Bruford 1979 WLIR broadcast

Back in 1979 WLIR-FM on Long Island broadcast a Bruford show from My Father's Place. It was a complete show, with these songs:

    01 - Hell's Bells
    02 - Sample And Hold
    03 - Fainting in Coils
    04 - Forever Until Sunday
    05 - One of a Kind
    06 - Joe Frazier
    07 - Travels With Myself
    08 - Beelzebub
09 - The Sahara of Snow
    10 - Adios a la Posada
    11 - Five G

*Some* of these performances were included on The Bruford Tapes live album; some tracks on that album are *different* performances of the same songs. And some of these songs never made it to the album at all.

Does anyone know if the show is in circulation? ( I have an old 2nd or 3rd generation dub of a cassette tape recorded off the radio; I'm guessing better versions must exist)

Hope so, I was there. Would love to hear it again.

I wish all the WLIR Tuesday night concerts were released.

I've had the complete show on tape for many years & made a fairly mediocre but listenable transfer to mp3 & iTunes. Looks something like this :

I would be nice to have it, but no link to be found.

However, the 1979 Paris (Bataclan) concert is still available on the BigO archives:

Audience recording, but fairly good sound quality.

Im actually kind of amazed that I can find no trace of this broadcast in the usual outlets. PRRP never seems to have done it either. One one site there is discussion of a broadcast supposedly from Toad's Place (CT), that's probably the MFP show, but the torrent is long defunct.

THe MFP show I have includes an early tryout of 'Joe Frazier', as well as 'Adios a la Posada' (it's the one linked in proggosaurus's post)

No it isn't - Bruford's between-tracks announcements are the same, so how on Earth would that be a different pertformance ?
Perhaps it's missing tracks (though it seems complete to me), but it IS the same performance as "The Bruford Tapes".

Sugarmegs has ten Bruford shows from 1979 alone, including at least one FM broadcast:

this is just the B page. Everythign else is here:

We're not talking high bit rate, but they can be downloaded or streamed.

Iirc Bruford played 2 nights, 4 sets at MFP along with 3 nights, 6 sets at The Bottom Line that week. I caught 2 sets at MFP (5 @ BL); Bruford's banter was nearly identical every show. The Bruford Tapes can be compared with other MFP recordings via the radio announcers opening intro. The remastered version of The Bruford Tapes contains the "complete" version; I believe some portions were from other sets at MFP due to excessive chatter/applause.

The 2005 Winterfold reissue has the original, edited performance, plus "Age Of Information" from the 1980 tour !

Hmmm...thought a 90's reissue was out there. Must be thinking of a bootleg; the band played longer than 45 minute sets. Also think WLIR-FM broadcast a MFP show from 1980.

The 79 Tour was most excellent.
I saw the first show of the American tour at The Bottom Line in NYC and then saw the LAST show of the tour in San Francisco. It was pure luck...my normal MO was summer in NY so the NY show was easy but I went out to visit a friend in SF just before the new semester began and we noticed he was playing there.

Bill and the band were on fire. I still can hear the thunder of Bill rolling across those big Roto-Toms.

    1) the original broadcast included 'Joe Frazier', yours doesn't. Proggosaurus's linked file is the same as the WLIR original broadcast show that I have on tape.

    2) the original broadcast is NOT the same as The Bruford Tapes. *SOME* of the performances on TBT are the same, others are not. It appears that TBT was compiled from more than one set. And TBT is not a complete show.

EDIT: I shouldn't have been so definite. Calyx might be right and me wrong -- it could just be the same MFP broadcast, with 'Joe Frazier' edited out, and 'Adios a La Posada' misnamed as 'Seems Like a Lifetime Ago' (and the 'Back to the Beginning' segue from 'Fainting in Coils' broken out as a separate track). I'd have to hear it to know for sure.

The remastered Bruford Tapes is the same (in terms of track lengths) as the original CD, and both are the same as the LP, and none of them are a complete set. The only addition is the bonus 'Age of Information' live track, which IIRC isn't even from the same tour.

FWIW, the new Bruford box remaster reprints info from The Bruford Tapes as

"Music from Feels Good to Me and One of a Kind re-shuffled, improvised on, and broadcast live on WLIR 92.7 FM from My Father's Place, Roslyn NY, July 12 1979

Recorded direct to 2-track and mixed for broadcast by Jeff Kracke for The Workshoppe recording studios"

But that remains inaccurate. A complete 1979 My Father's Place show (with announcements and lengthy between-song applause and patter and tune-ups) was broadcast -- and taped by fans and is available for streaming or download -- and only *some* of those performances are identical to the ones on The Bruford Tapes.

I had Bruford Tapes before I had One of a Kind, and so I'm a bit more used to the live versions than the studio versions--even if Bruford Tapes has a knockoff Holdsworth rather than the real deal.

Plus, One of a Kind always struck me as without the punch I loved from Feels Good to Me. Maybe it was the production? The CD mastering? Who knows.

All I know is that the live versions of Hells Bells and Travels with Myself in particular sound kinda distant and tame in the studio after hearing them all raw on the Bruford Tapes.

sully, there was one called King Of Bells from Highland in 1997 that's awfully close. haven't heard it so I can't say for sure. what's printed on the outside don't always match what's on the inside.

HL092#B3 Bruford [ KING OF BELLS ] My Father’s Place, Roslyn, NY. USA 7/12/79

Awful close to what? The full 7/12/79 show, including tracks not on that Highland CD, is available for streaming or download (the links are in my previous post). The Highland CD is superfluous, unless you prefer its EQ/tape source.

According to the tour chronology in the new boxed set, they played just one night at MFP, followed by two nights at The Bottom Line. These were the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dates of the US tour. Two sets per night was the rule at The Bottom Line (where I saw the band), I suspect the same for MFP.

What I suspect happened on The Bruford Tapes is that it includes performances from both sets from that night, rather than just the broadcast set.
