USA vs Mexico in Gold Cup final right now, pretty intense as you'd expect.

Well duh. The USA wasn't even in the last WC.

Worldwide viewers of Womens World Cup 1 Billion
Worldwide viewers of Mens World Cup 3.5 Billion

Womens WC revenue in 2015 $73 Million
Mens WC revenue 2010 $4 Billion

Guess why the prize money is different.

To quote last night's Conan, the USA Women's team has been doing so well they're thinking of starting a men's team.

Got a rules question for the esteemed panel here. When a player is substituted for, are they not able to return?

Nope, once out you're done for the game. You can go off the field for stitches or the like and come back on but your team plays a man down while you are off.

Unless you're Abby Wambach with a nasty cut in your head.

In which case, they staple your cut closed and you don't miss a minute.

I'm sure the game was still going on while she was getting stapled, but pretty cool, tough as nails.

Not after you've been substituted you can't. Unless you are talking the recreational game where the rules are much more lax. I played O30 & O40 soccer in the USA and players could go in and out as much as they wanted. Professional game is limited to 3 subs and they are one way.

I'm sorry, where am I discussing global viewership in my post? I specifically said, "Nielsen ratings (in the US)..."

Perhaps a more relevant comparison would be the Gold Cup final which was MEX vs USA? 8.7 million on FS1 and Univision combined.

How about the WWC Final vs other sports in the US?
WWC: 11.4 million (that number jumps to 15.87 million across English-language and Spanish-language television and streaming in the United States)
2019 Game 7 Stanley Cup Final: 8.723 million (the highest of the series)
2019 English Premier League final game (a new high): 2.2 million viewers across NBC Sports’ TV and digital platforms in the US
2018 MLS Cup Final: 1.8 million

Not according to the International Football Association Board, which makes the rules FIFA follows:

    • the player being substituted:
    • receives the referee’s permission to leave the field of play, unless already off the field, and must leave by the nearest point on the boundary line unless the referee indicates that the player may leave directly and immediately at the halfway line or another point (e.g. for safety/security or injury)
    • must go immediately to the technical area or dressing room and takes no further part in the match, except where return substitutions are permitted
