    RIP Dr John

We lost a legend today. Dr John has left the big stage, walking on gilded splinters.

Time to play the Locked In album, a dazzling recording by anyone's standards and a helluva note to end your career on.

^ WTF? I would suggest the incorporation of Zydeco, psychedelic rock and New Orleans voodoo jazz found in album like Gris-Gris would constitute at least a proto-progressive release. That Dr. John appeared with Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa & The Mothers, Johnny Winter, Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Led Zeppelin, Pink Fairies, Yes, Genesis, and Hawkwind at The Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music would indicate an alternative, counterculture music program. He later incorporated free jazz and funk into the mix as well.

Mac Rebbanack (sp?) was very progressive. I can only hope Zappathustra was kidding.

I'm not sure what some of the lyrics in the chorus are. Nobody else seems to know, either - every lyric site has something different.

"Com to me, gilly com-com, I walk on guilded splinters,
Com to me, gilly com-com, I walk on guilded splinters,
Com to me, gilly com-com, I walk on guilded splinters,
    Didout forainah,
    Didout forainah,
    Didout forainah,
    Didout forainah
    "

Everything else was enunciated well enough to be understood, but not those phrases.
Weirdly pronounced English? Mangled Louisiana French? African phrases from voodoo rituals? Nonsense words that sounded right? Only Dr. John knew.

That part is "Tit Alberto," which is one of the weird character names mentioned in the liner notes. ("Tit" in this case is apparently a Cajun contraction of petit or little.)

I was at a local show this evening and mentioned to a friend that I had never seen Dr. John. Then I come home to this. What a tragic loss of an American Treasure.

It's a sad day for music. RIP, Mack.

I only picked up his debut last year. Way late to the party. But, of course, I knew of him for decades.

R.I.P to the last of the best.

Saw him opening for King Crimson circa 1973. Weirdest combination I ever witnessed, although PFM and Dave Mason came close. RIP.

Gris Gris is as stoned an album I can think of. Caught him in' 69, the height of his swamp-psych period. Good times.

    RIP.......

Long before he became 'Dr. John', he'd been in the music industry for years as a session player/producer, several of the old 50s New Orleans R&B records have him on (an era he later paid homage to with an album of covers).

Dr. John was definitely part of the soundtrack of my life. Rest in peace, Mac. You will be sorely missed.

Ι was kidding. I erased my comment, it's good to see Dr John getting some of the love he deserves in these pages. Those late 60's albums are part of the golden treasury of progressive music.

His autobio, "Under a Hoodoo Moon: The Life of the Night Tripper" is one of the better music biographies I've read.

Folks here don't have much of a sense of humor, particularly about the death of somebody beloved.

RIP Dr., one of the Giants of music, caught him at The Bottom Line NYC Opening Nite 2-12-74, I'll never forget that night, the place was rockin crazy and he was still wearing the head dress thingy. Locked Down from 2013 highly recommended, Funk On Doctor.....

It wasn't humor, but more of a personal frustration that some other giants also went down recently and no one took notice.

But I understand that the death of a great musician overshadows all this, and that nobody is obliged to share my own sentiments on the issue. So my comment was inappropriate, regardless of people's reactions which I do not find offensive.

So RIP for one of the greats.

Who? Roky Erickson and Leon Redbone got R.I.P. threads, so who was missed?

The Roky thread got an anemic response, and in many respects, he was a giant.
