One of the Bravewrods reporters/writers attended a listening session for Opeth's new album...and conducted an interview. Excellent read for those wondering about the growls and the level of proggi-ness:

Very cool, thank you for posting! I'm looking forward to hearing the album in Swedish! So many of Opeth's contemporaries in the middle 90's like Mike's friends in Katatonia recorded at least some of their music in their native tongue, but Opeth has always been in English.

I'm not surprised about the vocals. Hearing the Ghost Reveries album live the listener really gets a sense of the strain on the vocal chords despite how awesome and powerful Mike could sing the harsh vocals. He was so good in fact in his prime that he does all the harsh vocals on Katatonia's excellent Brave Murder Day from the middle 90's. Jonas Renske said back then his voice just wasn't cut out for singing like that. Honestly, it's probably for the best since Katatonia has made some stunningly beautiful records this past decade with haunting clean vocals. Prog fans should definitely check out 2009's Night is the New Day.

Anyway, really looking forward to the new Opeth. 13 albums in and not a sucky one yet.

Commenting on the new song, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt says, “”Hjärtat Vet Vad Handen Gör” or ”Heart in Hand” as it’s called in English is one of the first couple of songs I wrote for ”In Cauda Venenum”. I immediately knew that it would probably be favoured by ”the powers that be” when talks of future singles for the record would commence. And I was right. I generally leave it up to the labels or managements to pick the so-called singles. I’m indifferent as I put an equal amount of dedication into all songs, so it doesn’t matter all that much to me. I guess it’s one of the more straightforward songs on the album. A rather rocking little thing. It’s got one of the ”happy mistakes” in it too. Mendez bass broke down in the middle of recording. At the time he played an old Hofner Beatles-esue bass guitar that started humming real bad, but it sounded so good we immediately decided to keep it in there. I’d be putting myself down if I said that noise is the best part of the song, but it’s up there. I like when stuff happens out of your control, and it actually adds to the piece. This is the first full taster of the new Opeth album, and of course I hope you like it. All the songs on the new album are different from each other and therefore equally representable in my view. Enjoy!"

Recorded last year at Stockholm's Park Studios, In Cauda Venenum will be released in two versions, in both Swedish and English languages. Regarding the sonic direction of the new record, Åkerfeldt adds, “For us, at this stage with In Cauda Venenum, heaviness isn’t guitars tuned down with screaming vocals over the top. That’s not necessarily what I call ‘heavy’ music these days. I can listen to Korn and say, ‘OK, that’s heavy.’ But it doesn’t really mean anything to me. I mean, I catch up on things in magazines or online. I read about bands that have the ‘heaviest record ever,’ and I’m not too impressed by that. OK, it’s cool but what does it say? What does it mean? It’s an impossible mission, to be the heaviest. That’s been done before. Over time, I got tired of that tag. Of course, when I was younger it meant everything to me. I was always on the pursuit for heaviness in my youth, trying to find the next level of heaviness. First it was death metal, then it was bands like Meshuggah, but heaviness is now more about emotions, heavy chord progressions, music that has feelings. Heaviness doesn’t mean Meshuggah anymore, although indeed they’re a ****ing heavy band. I’m not trying to tap into tht anyamore.”

Love the new track. As with most Opeth, can't wait for the whole album to drop. And I'll state the obvious, this band has the best album covers.

Nice Pale Communion vibe going on here.
What I always find weird with Akerfeldt's songwriting is that he often seems to stick unrelated bits of music together almost randomly. The acoustic ending here seems completely unrelated to the rest of the song it could be a different track altogether. You often wonder on what basis he decides to write a 5 minute track or a 7-8 minute track by adding an extra bit at the end. Nice tune nonetheless.
    Not just a Genesis fanboy.

good to hear they abandoned that retro tone they tried to emulate. Bass is more textured and balanced on this one... I bet this track will be followed by something crushing

Wait, was that song 16 minutes? Or was it an 8 minute song played twice on the video? Sounds like the song ended with an acoustic part then started over from the beginning again.

    Really excited about this!

Happy about no growls. While I never minded the growls on earlier Opeth albums, they sound dated to me. For some reason, they always come off sounding like an attempt to have the parents of 14 year old boys, freak out. "Oh no! My son is into Satanic music!".

    Clean vocals never sound dated.

The sample track posted sounds killer!

There's only one date in the U.S. on the tour and it's here in Las Vegas but - there's always a but - it's part of a three day Psycho Las Vegas festival and a ticket for the one day is $118. I don't see that happening. Bummer.

Maybe they will do a tour of the U.S. later but so far just the one gig.

So far I'm digging these first two tracks generally more than the stuff on the last few albums. Love the Swedish vocals too. In.
