New three-part discussion series with Bill Bruford

My humble progressive music page Pienemmät purot proudly presents new three part discussion series with legendary Bill Bruford.

My friend Saku Mantere had an unique opportunity to talk with Bill Bruford about drumming, composing and being a leader in creative environment:

Saku Mantere: "Bill Bruford is not only the best drummer in the world: he is also a musicologist with PhD. This spring, I had the opportunity to conduct an in-depth correspondence with Bill, with the intent of understanding how Bill, the musicologist, looks back at his career as a composer, bandleader and drummer."

The first part of this correspondence is now available at: https://pienemmatpurot.wordpress.com...-one-drumming/

(Note about Pienemmät purot. Pienemmät purot is my passion project that I started about six months ago. I publish reviews and articles about progressive an experimental music. Site is 100% uncommercial proposition. Most content is in Finnish but hopefully there is more stuff available in English also in the future.)

The final part of the discussion series with Bill Bruford now available. In this last episode Saku Mantere and Bruford discuss social dynamics and leadership in the context of musical groups.

A thoughtful read, although a bit overly scholarly at times for me.

Bill and the interviewer spend a lot of time analyzing and breaking down different kinds of leaders, but what I didn't see them talk about is the way leadership can be transferred either due to laziness or insecurity. The interview at the end of the video of Yes playing in Germany in 1969 is a case in point. The interviewer asks them something about politics and the entire band just turn and look at Bill. Not because he was the leader of the band, but because they knew "he'll come up with something good." I wonder how many times in a musical collaboration the players will instantly defer to a bandmate who they have more confidence in coming up with something worthwhile.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

That would have been interesting point of view also. And it is certainly true that leadership often just falls on some band member's lap without him or her particularly aiming for it. Thanks for reading!

Exceptional interview. Your questions brought out some excellent and in-depth answers.
