His real name was Sonny Blount or something, right? So is "Sun Ra" a total fiction, like Jethro Tull filed under J, or is it a pseudonym like David Bowie, Elton John or Dean Martin?

Where should Sun Ra be filed?
Outside. You don't want to get any shavings or dust on your living room floor.
Some call him Mister Ra, some call him Mister Ree...

I always put him next to Sonship.

I have so much Sun Ra, that he requires a whole separate CD case. So he's filed under "Sun Ra". Period.
And his Earth name was Herman Blount.

I saw him at the Bottom Line around 1987
great show!
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
I never got to see Ra, but I did see the Arkestra, led by Marshall Allen, in September 2001. They were selling posters at the show, and I got invited down into the dressing room after the show, and we passed the poster I bought around, and the entire Arkestra signed it for me. I took it home, showed my mom the next day, and she framed it for me (not a fancy frame, but it does the job it's supposed to).
I've missed them the last couple times they've been here, but I'd love to see them again. Hard to believe Marshall is still leading the band, and doing other gigs besides. He's gotta be, what? 90 something years old?
Space is still the place!
Well, as my nick may indicate I am a pretty big admirer of Sun Ra's music. I have always considered it more a title than a name and hence filed it under S as well...
I'm filing him under "R." It appears Sun Ra was the stage name used by Blount, it referred to the man, the leader of the Arkestra, and not to his whole band. I don't know if anyone ever called him, or if he called himself, "Mr. Ra" but this is what makes sense to me.

Is it OK that I read the title of this thread & I'm shaking my head & crying while in the fetal position as I question life itself?

^^^ Just be happy that people still listen to Sun Ra...
I’ve always seen his albums filed under “S” but you know what? Put it where it works for you. If sticking his discs under “R” makes more sense to you, so be it.
(10cc belongs under “T,” though, NOT before “A.” I will not budge on that point.)
