in my mind that guitar lick is as epic as Starship Trooper only it ends way too soon.

ooh... The Bar-Kays... man they were great back then!
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Proggy funk? Sky King. Several Tower of Power members, Dave Brubek's son on bass. Lots of odd time signatures. Unfortunately the album went nowhere.

I'd hate to be the one to break it to them, but they sound about as funky as they look...

A marvelous tune by the great blues/psych/soul artist Shuggie Otis (son of Johnny)...

Shuggie did dabble with different genres (and played bass guitar on a couple Zappa records besides) so the "proggy feel" isn't just in your imagination.

Naaah, I was only kidding ... Proholio's suggestions are more than welcome.

Actually, if at first the song sounds a tad twee, one gets frustrated at the ending (too abrupt, really)

There are funk-rock parts in that track by Nektar.
Another track I've posted in the same post isn't funk, but funky krautrock. Slightly off-topic, but amazing one.

EDIT: Two other gems from Eastern Europe:

    Nobody mentioned Herbie yet?

I still wouldn't consider that Nektar track funky. Just because it has a wah-wah effect on the guitar, doesn't make it funky.

I know that album quite well, because it was my first Nektar. Never considered it funky.

EDIT: Two other gems from Eastern Europe:

uuuhhh, Svettie, you still have a solid problem of discerning what a musical genre is....

Yeah, there slight traces of funk in your Dymon Jr suggestion, and ok you hear some in Nektar's track, but we're talking FUNK (not junk)
Your Izvir suggestions are a little more on line, though, but please refrain from highjacking threads with besides-the-point-suggestions....

... or wait until the thread reaches page 8 or 9 to do so and that everyone's not paying attention anymore.
