Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
I have not heared that many new records yet. Top 3 so far

A new Poil is already waiting for me and a highly anticipated album of Isildurs bane and Peter Hammill is coming out in 2-weeks.
Icarus - Mosaicmic - minimalist jazz with zeuhl feel
Ni - Pantophobie - French avant punky folky rock
Lost Cowns - Every night something happens - new psyche pop supergroup from Knifeworld, Stars In Battledress.

So far? I'd have to go with:
The Mercury Tree-Spidermilk (17 tone microtonal madness. Nothing else quite like it)
Snarky Puppy-Immigrance (awesome fusion, superbly recorded. Another high quality release from them)
Ikarus-Mosaismic (superb wordless vocals, over awesome jazzy/proggy grooves)
Gaspar-The Forest of Gaspar (highly atmospheric, image conjuring, instrumental stuff)
Beat Circus-These Wicked Things (David Lynch meets Sergio Leone, with tasty dashes of avant-prog thrown in)
Graham Costello's Strata-Obelisk (dazzling jazz/minimalist/prog/noise/fusion...you name it, all done with highly skilled players and twisting, turning compositions)
Shaping up to be another great, great year. Likely and confirmed 2019 releases still to look forward to: IZZ, Sonus Umbra, Devil's Staircase, Thank You Scientist, Bent Knee, Tool, Bubblemath, Panzerpappa, Intronaut, Kamencello and lots more I'm sure I'm either forgetting, or don't know about yet!

35 Tapes - "Lost & Found" (debut album) - Norway.
Great Wide Nothing - "The View From Olympus" (debut album) - The States.
Neil, thank you for the great post. It's so much more helpful when there's just the smallest of descriptions to go with the list - especially with more obscure artists. I am listening to the Ikarus right now because of that.

Of the 2019 releases I have heard, not much has risen above the pack. It's been largely average albums. I did not care for Lost Crowns.
My top 3 would be...
1. Motorpsycho - The Crucible: A very focused effort in their catalog. It RAWKS a bit, especially on the first track, and the songs naturally progress into each other. I enjoyed it better than The Tower.
2. Ikarus - Mosaismic: I can already tell you without even listening to the whole thing this will be near the top of my list. It combines two sounds I enjoy Zeuhl's jazzy side with a repetitive minimalist groove VERY reminiscent to Nik Bartsch. Yes please.
3. Soen - Lotus: Swedish Metal with an emo bend a la Katatonia, Tool, Perfect Circle, heavier sides of Riverside, Opeth, etc.

Definitely. The most emotional of the moderns, for me. 'Along The Ridgeway', the instrumental sections of 'Leaden Stour' and 'Winchester From St. Giles' Hill' always bring tears to my eyes. Such beautiful, heartwrenching melodies.
