Not too far from correct. Bias frequencies "mix up" the magnetic medium to make it ready to take an audio-frequency signal. Cassettes generally operate with a bias frequency of 60 KHz.
Therefore if they're dubbed at faster than 4:1 the bias frequency become audible.
Plus, the smaller heads and slower tape speed limit what you can get out of a cassette. But hey, the hipsters LOVE them.
