    Framptons Farewell

Diagnosed with some awful degernerative plague. Because he so totally blew his cred, people do tend to forget Peter Frampton has an impressive background as a musician. Post Humble Pie, his first solo LP 1971's excellent Wind of Change was recorded while he was doing sessions for All Things Must Pass and features Ringo, Klaus Voorman, and Billy Preston. Recommended without reservation. Frampton was recruited and personally rehearsed by George for the Concert for Bangla Desh when George was unsure if Clapton or Jesse Ed Davis would show up (they did). Frampton did session work for Apple and Beatle related artists (Harrison produced Doris Troy, Harry Nilsson, Ringo), a couple early John Entwistle solo LPs, Tim Hardin, etc. Toured with the Jack Bruce-Gary Brooker version of Ringos Allstar Band, David Bowies Glass Spider Tour (a critical bust, I know) Frampton's Camel is also a strong early 70's guitar rock LP. I personally didnt care for the big Live LP (that awful talk box gimmick especially)- it seemed to point him in the lightweight bouncy AOR direction that made him cringeworthy. Also noted that many years later the first session Bill and Charlie did together after Bills departure was for an instrumental track of Peter Framptons. (And plays with Keith on Alexis Korners "Bootleg Him" LP)

A buddy of mine just convinced me to go see Frampton this summer, last tour ever and all that. I know none of his music other than Frampton Comes Alive. What should I listen to (other than FCA!) to get an understanding of Frampton as an artist and to better enjoy the show?

EDIT: Should have read the OP carefully, seems like Frampton's Camel may be one to try.

Actually the material on "Wind of Change" is more hippie UK oriented, a bit more diverse so I give it the edge. "Camel" was more focued and hard rock containing vastly superior versions of some the material on the live LP.

You didn't go to high school in the 70s without hearing Frampton Live through a pair of Jensen Tri-Axle 6X9s. Usually in a Chevy Nova or some other such rust bucket.

P.S. By the way, was rummaging through some Frampton this A.M. because of this thread. Came upon a really nice cover of George Harrison. The solo at the end is quite lovely....

I was a fan since the Humble Pie days, had all four of the solo albums that preceded the dreaded "Alive" album. Wasn't crazy about that album since if I recall the drummer was the only one who actually played on any of the studio albums and I thought the bass and keys on the studio albums were more capably done than on the live album. Picked up the next studio album, "I'm In You", HORRIBLE! Never paid attention after that but it was pretty sad that he was just reconnecting with Steve Marriott to make some new music when Steve died. It was fantastic that he got together with Greg Ridley and Clem Clemson to play some Pie tunes in the Marriott tribute that you can see on Youtube, highly enjoyable.

An interesting lesser known appearance from the 80's on Hal Willner's Thelonious Monk tribute LP. Chris Spedding and Frampton on guitars, Frampton plays the solo.

The unfortunately titled "Thank You, Mr. Churchill" is one of the baddest-assed releases in recent years:

My opinion: one of the best guitar albums every is his instrumental album from around 2006 called Fingerprints. Every track is a different feel and sound. Pure Ear Candy. His cover of “Black Hole Sun” kills the original.

That's more or less my case... I only really ever heard Comes alive, and was only mildly interested (outside Do You Feel) at the time, and I dropped all interest upon hearing whatever was playing on the radio from his next album.

Is Comes Alive a good recap of his previous solo career, or are there gems in those first few albums not present in the double live?

Then see how different this is:

    And then Black Hole Sun:

My point is most people know him from a few hits. Fingerprints show the omnivore and excellent musician that he is.

The studio version of one his best known hits- LP version is far heavier and the guitar at then is blazing..no talk box in sight.

Thx to bfd and Gizmotron for the YT links

I've +/- upped my opinion of Frampton, but probably not enough to start buying albums of his.

BTW, Never got into Humble Pie either... Probably too late for me to start digging in that vein either.

Thanks. I should listen to that album again. It was perfectly timed for when I started getting into jazz after starting with rock.
