    Brazilian Prog

Laser Edge had a recent sale on some great Brazilian Progressive Rock albums that seem to have flown under the radar of many fine folks here, given the lack of any mention of these bands. I ended up buying 4-5 titles and each one is just great. There are two musicians that these bands revolve around: Ronaldo Rodrigues (keyboards) and Luis Zamith (guitars).

Let's start with Caravela Escarlate, as this one is still available on LE's website:

Ronaldo Rodrigues is also present on another stunner, the Arcpelago's "Simbiose" album:

Luis Zamith has a gorgeous solo album where he is accompanied by Rodrigues but most importantly by Paulo Teles on flute and this guy is just amazing. Here are two songs that should give you some idea:

Actually, LE still has this one too: https://www.lasercd.com/cd/introspeccao-0

Before releasing his solo album, Zamith appeared on Vitral's "Entre as estrelas" album:

Finally (I'll go away after this), the keyboard player on Vitral is Eduardo Aguillar and he has a few gorgeous albums as well. Here are so extracts from Floresta I and II:

if he has any of these I highly recommend them!

    Araujo, Marco Antonio Influencias
    Bacamarte Depois Do Fim
    Dogma Album
Araujo, Marco Antonio Quando a Sorte Te Solta Um Cisne Na Noite
    Araujo, Marco Antonio Lucas
    Fernandes, Glauco Glauco Fernandes
Kaoll Sob os Olhos de Eva
    Lehmejum Lehmejum
Mariano, Cesar Camargo & Cia São Paulo, Brasil
    Quantum Quantum
    Quaterna Requiem Velha Gravura
    Viana, Marcus Pantanal: Suite Sinfonica
    Wejah Senda
    Vitral Entre as Estrelas
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Sorry, one more. The LE description for Caravela Escarlate mentions a band called Massahara because that too features Ronaldo Rodrigues. That one I don't have (it was released a while ago, in 2011) but I did a search on YT and sure enough, here it is:

The description calls it a heavy-prog album. I think that is dead-on!

many of them are older, yes... here are some newer ones I would recommend:

Kaoll - Sob os Olhos de Eva
    Gustavo Santhiago - Animam
    Anxtron - Brainstorm
    Anxtron - Jellyfish

and I see you already got the Vitral

Here's our last thread on 'everything' Brazilian: http://www.progressiveears.org/forum...ight=Brazilian

As far as bands that have flown under the radar, Trem do Futuro are a band that need a lot more love. Three albums to date, all worth the effort. I believe they are from Fortaleza.

Shorter-lived bands from that mini-boom of Brazilian prog in the 90s that are worth your attention: Grandbell and Nave both performed a similar style of Yes-influenced prog mixed with a mellow tropicalia feel. Nave have two albums under their belt, but Grandbell only made the one. Algaravia made the one album of Crimso-influenced rock again with a distinct Brazilian feel which results in a truly one-of-a-kind sound. Via Lumini made two albums of somewhat synth-led prog that almost had an Eastern Bloc sound (think East or Solaris). Two albums, I don’t think the first was ever released [officially] on CD. João Kurk of the legendary 70s band Terreno Baldio sang on the second album.
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

Thanks for starting this. My tastes for Brazilian music hug more closely to the jazzy side of things. If you're so inclined, I recommend:

    Projeto B
    Armazem
    Egberto Gismonti
    Grupo Um
    Hermeto Pascoal
    Arrigo Barnabe
    WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.

Add Mente Clara to that list.

Brazil was always a musical hotbed. I very rarely hear any stuff from there which I find anything less than at least "lightly intriguing".

Easy listening or elevator-music is mostly bad when it's from places like Luxembourg or Singapore.

Milton Banana Trio come from a good'n'nice place. I don't dislike them.

I haven't gotten to the Meta but that Bixiga 70 is some very creative Kosmigroov or Afro Prog (whichever you prefer).

    I'm loving that!

Out of my radar and I really enjoyed it: that mix of hard rock, psicodelia & prog made my afternoon!.
