Thread: Adrian Belew Power Quartet

    Adrian Belew Power Quartet

look at this announcement I found:

For more than a decade the Adrian Belew Power Trio stunned audiences around the world.
Now Adrian is ready to re-invent his live show with a new quartet which includes Jordan Perlson
on drums, Saul Zonana on keyboards, guitar, and vocals, and bassist extraordinaire Julie Slick.
The tour dates will be in support of Adrian's newest release "POP-SIDED", coming March 2019.
Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy master musicians playing great songs and having a ball!

Adrian describes the show as, "a more complete picture of most things I've done. More songs,
new songs from the award-winning FLUX app, King Crimson material I haven't played for years,
and a dose of classic Power Trio. It's my intention to make this the best Adrian Belew show ever!”

just to add a few details: the power trio WILL be playing Cruise To The Edge on february 3. I don’t think the trio is over, it could conceivably return at a future point.

but musically the new band is more about presenting my songs from throughout my career. I want to finally do some FLUX material. I want to do King Crimson material the exact way it was done on record (and do krimson stuff the trio could not do). I want to FLUX through my catalog of solo works. I want to do new songs from my new record. I want to touch on material I have done with other artists. and I want to play the best of the power trio.

boy, I sure want a lot!!

anyway, it all starts with shows across the U.S. beginning february 28.
    I am psyched!

I love Adrian dearly, but the title of his upcoming album does not instill me with confidence.

"Pop-Sided." Quite honestly, I'm all for it if it is a return to the days of Mr. Music Head, Young Lions, and Inner Revolution. I am very excited by his plans. I already have tickets for the Philly show!

Quite a bit of 'space' between dates to be filled but, at the moment, this appears to be the date I will try to attend.

me too on both fronts (bought my Ardmore ticket immediately)

I can dig the Power Trio but that format limits the scope of Ade's writing and playing. you kinda know what the setlist is going to be as well

Mr Music Head is a huge accomplishment and I'm totally stoked to have him (hopefully) approach this aspect of his live career again. it's been a while

This sounds like it has good potential, although I know nothing of the drummer or keyboardist. I love Belew's early solo material and would enjoy hearing some of it live. Interesting that he makes a point of saying that he wants to do the Crimson material "the exact way it was done on record"; seems like a pretty obvious swipe at the current KC incarnation. Hopefully a successful tour of this type will encourage him to let go of any animosity to which he still might cling.

Happy with what I have to be happy with.

Jordan is a great drummer. We were at Berklee together. He also did some work with Echolyn and plays with some New York based bands and has recorded with at least on group on Zorn's Tzadik label. He will do a fine job.

Saul Zonana is who opened for Adrian's Power Trio last year here in Kansas City (and I'm sure other dates).
From what I remember, I can't envision him replicating Robert's guitar parts the exact way it was done on record, but I could be wrong.

honestly, if i wanted to hear it the "exact way it was done on record" ---- i would just play the record.

Why isn't Tobias Ralph on drums? He's amazing.

It's not a swipe at the current KC incarnation. Adrian explained on his Facebook page that he wants to have a 2nd guitarist to better recreate the music he made with Robert. The Power Trio was limited to one guitar. That's what he means by "the exact way it was done on record."

Got that much from the list of band members. Still seems like a thinly veiled jab to me, given the history. It's also possible that I'm reading something into it that's not there.

I thought he and Robert buried the hatchet, and Adrian is the “9th member” of KC now. So he shouldn’t be upset anymore. But who knows? Adrian is a really emotional guy. He yelled at me and my guest after a show in Annapolis a couple of years ago when he was locked out of his van, and we tried to talk to him.

I really dig Saul and look forward to this. I bought one of his solo records a few years ago and it's excellent. I'm hoping this is more of a collaborative effort with Belew and not meant to have another guitarist aping Fripp. Last time I saw the trio Saul was working the sound board and acting as the man behind the curtain adding some extra vocals and guitar parts which were great.

I like some of the songs on all those albums, but must admit the earlier stuff and the more recent experimental stuff is more my bag. But it is a solid new band and my mind is open, it will probably be great.

Honestly, if the next album was a return to the pop sensibilities of Inner Revolution, I will love it!
