Thread: Female musicians ?

    Female musicians ?

Which female musicians do you rate! Not talking about vocalist, those that impress as an instrumentalist !
Only three come immediately to mind
    Christine Mcvie
    Sheila E
    Orianthi
Sure there must be others ?

    Sheila E
    Lita Ford
    Cherie Currie
    Sandy West
that other chick who was in The Runaways, Miss Do You Wanna Touch Me, ya know, Wassername!
    Poison Ivy (from The Cramps)
    Jodi Linscott
    Debbie Davies (great blues guitarist)
    Jennifer Batten
Mirielle Bauer (played with Gong on You and Shamal)
Brandi Wynne (she took a lot of shit for being a less than impressive keyboardist, but I was duly impressed with her bass guitar skills when Ozrics played at Progday a few years ago)

I can't believe this is a serious question. Women make up half the population. There isn't space on the PE servers to list all the women playing music who are at least as good if not better than the men with equivalent experience.

Five posts and I’m the first to mention Ruth Underwood? You folks are slacking! Most men would kill to wield a pair of mallets as well as her.

I remain pretty impressed by the brief boom of all-woman rock bands from the early 70s, namely Fanny, Isis and Birtha. They impress as both vocalists and instrumentalists.

Yes, half the population is distaff but something less than half of all musicians known for their instrumental prowess. Although the answer will be a vast list, I thought it was a fair question.

Especially if they don't sing. Women musicians, for some reason, are expected to sing.

Several in the percussion section have already been mentioned, so let's add Marilyn Mazur, Ruth Underwood, Evelyn Glennie.

You know, I had always thought of the Carpenters as a cheesy Manilow lite outfit, even if Karen Carpenter did have a great voice. I had literally NO idea Karen Carpenter could play like this:

Dammit, I should have thought of them! Well, at least it's not too late for me to mention Laurie Spiegel and Pauline Oliveros.

Also can't forget Suzanne Stephens, a clarinet player who worked extensively with Karlheinz Stockhausen. You can hear her on the albums of Sirius, Sternklang, Harlekin and other Stockhausen pieces. The cover of the old DG LP edition of Harlekin had pictures of her wearing this cute harlequin outfit.

    Uhhhh, does Wendy Carlos count?

Remember Sandy Horne from Spoons (the Canadian band)?

Back on the subject of all-woman bands, how about Mother Superior, the British, slightly proggy answer to Fanny:

    -------------
    MIKE (a.k.a. "Progbear")

A bit of free-jazz freakout from last spring, featuring pianist Ann Ballester:

I always liked her playing with the fusion band Edition Spéciale. Her synth tone was very warm, her playing very fluid. Their third album also featured an extended guest performance from Mireille Bauer on marimba and vibes, adding a very nice feel to their music.

For years I thought Sandy Nelson, the drummer, was a woman. He isn't.

His album covers all featured a great-looking woman model though.

Forgot about Fanny , remember seeing them on the OGWT ...gud call on Ars Nova also! Many names listed that i & probably most have never heard of !
I guess it isn't easy for a women rock musician to get the same respect & adulation as their male peers?
When a band member leaves they are usually replaced with a musician of the same gender !
I think Orianthi must be an exception & kicks ass in Alice Cooper's band!

History says that it is VERY DIFFICULT for a woman to make her way in a band unless she's romatically involved with one (or more) of the other musicians.
