Cream "Goodbye Tour Live 1968" 4CD box set (Polydor) - 2/7/2020

UMC is delighted to announce the 4-CD, special edition of Cream’s Goodbye Tour Live 1968. Set for release in February 2020, this sumptuous set brings together 36 tracks, including 29 making their first appearance on CD, recorded during Cream’s farewell tour of the U.S. in October 1968 and their final UK date at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 26th November of that same year. There are a total of 19 previously unreleased tracks, and a further 10 tracks from the Royal Albert Hall show, which have only ever been available on DVD. Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke supplies insightful liner notes, chronicling the group’s collective musical genius and their legendary final tour.

On its original release in February 1969, Goodbye, which combined live performances from their last tour dates with a handful of studio recordings, rose to the UK no. 1 slot and to no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard chart. This new expanded edition comprises three U.S. concerts; Oakland Coliseum, Los Angeles Forum, San Diego Sports Arena alongside London’s Royal Albert Hall. It captures Cream at their virtuosic best, at the end but also at the height of their career.

With Cream, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton, set the template for not only the ‘supergroup’ but also the ‘power trio’, with their innate musical talent and brilliance. Only coming together as Cream in July 1966, they shone briefly but blindingly brightly throughout two trailblazing years.

Sounds good ! - the live tracks on Cream Goodbye were stellar!

Politician from this recording also appeared on 'Those Were The Days ' - but the sound was lousy compared to the original LP and the japanese polydor CD (especially the bass), so I really hope they have done this properly !

I've been waiting for something like this for decades. I agree that the Goodbye and Live Cream Vol. 2 stuff sounds great, so finally we get to hear the full shows straight from the multitracks. I'm also curious how much they will have improved the RAH show. As flawed as the production on the film's music was, it is still a classic.

^^ It would be nice to see a fully restored DVD of the complete final show, too.

Sounds fantastic! I wonder how much it will go for?
I’m rehearsing a Cream tribute band currently. We have a gig in January and one in February upcoming, in the Bay Area. Absolute Cream is the name, unless they decide to change the name yet again.

The track list implies 'Spoonful' is a previously released version - but the only live version I know about is from Wheels of Fire (also on the Those Were The Days box), and that was recorded at Winterland in March 1968. I put this list together some time ago:

    07/03/1968 Fillmore - Toad*, Rollin’ and Tumblin’†
    08/03/1968 Winterland - Traintime*
09/03/1968 Winterland - Sleepy Time Time†, Sunshine of Your Love††
    10/03/1968 Winterland - Crossroads*, Spoonful*, Sweet Wine† Tales of Brave Ulysses††, Steppin’ Out††, N.S.U.†
    04/10/1968 Oakland - Deserted Cities of the Heart††, White Room††, Politician††
19/10/1968 The Forum - I’m So Glad**, Politician**, Sitting on Top of the World**

    Wheels of Fire*
    Goodbye**
    Live Cream†
    Live Cream Volume II††

.... soooooo, I'm wondering why I would need those four discs (mostly same set lists as well) on top of what I've already got.

Maybe the same songs, but not the same performances. I have versions of some that are 30+ minutes long. Others might be half that length.

I think it came out on a fairly recent Eric Clapton collection called Life In 12 Bars.

I am buying it mainly due to the LA Forum gig. Listening to the Cream Goodbye tracks they were on fire.

The RAH isn't musically as interesting. (imo )

Nice to see "Steppin' Out" included. I caught them on this tour (with the Moody Blues & Terry Reid), and even though I have all the old vinyl, this box appears to be required.
