    Julia Holter - Aviary

    Howdy folks;

This might appeal to some peeps here who are open to experimental pop/jazz/soundtrack/pyschedelic/progressive artists. It's a bit hard to be much more specific, as she tends to be a tad mecurial in style. I love the hell out of Julia Holter and was mesmerized when I saw her band @ Big Ears supporting 'Loud City Song.'

This new one 'Aviary' is pretty excellent, expansive, weird, and kind of beautiful to me. It reminds me a bit more of her early stuff like 'Tragedy' in that it's kind of fearless in scope and ideas.

A review that might do a less-sucky description than me: https://tonedeaf.com.au/julia-holter-interview/

Kind of hard to pick one song to represent things as I kind of think the album works as a whole/complete statement, but...well, here is her official single:

I kind of like this one:

If you dig it, own it: https://juliaholter.bandcamp.com/album/aviary
CD / Vinyl also available from Domino.

Oh, and she'll be through on tour in 2019. Worth a few bucks.

    Anyway, thanks for reading...enjoy!
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I’ve been digging this one, though I hadn’t paid too much attention to her in the past. It really is a beautiful piece of avant-pop

For me personally, her finest are 'Tragedy' (her first, almost completely solo, more experimental but really beautiful) and 'Loud City Song' almost a concept album, full band, just awesome.

    I’ll check those out.
I gave Have You in My Wilderness a try when it came out to much acclaim and it was fine it just didn’t make much of an impression. Sounds like Aviary brings together her experimental and pop sides in a more satisfying way.

Have You In My Wilderness left me cold too, to be honest. It was a bit too straightforward for my tastes, even if it was excellent songwriting and performances.

‘Feel You’ from ‘Have you in my wilderness’ is one of the most exquisitely crafted pop songs that I’ve heard in the last decade. Hearing her sing ‘It’s impossible to see who I’m waiting for in my raincoat’ gives me the shivers everytime. Spellbinding.

My way in was ‘Have You In My Wilderness ‘ which I loved, the song ‘Lucette Stranded On The Island’ is a tune I’ll take with me to the grave, I found it enormously affecting. Looking forward to this one.

Heard about this one, and saw the review on Pitchfork, so my curiosity was piqued. Now seeing you gents here talking about her music in favorable terms, I will give it a listen.

While automatic reactions to this scream "pretentiousness", this is definitely not the case. A daring, moving and quality record. Thanks for the heads up and the thread.

Finally got around to getting this album.

It is completely weird but with an ethereal beauty to it. An alienating but fascinating listen.

Julia Holter has a new album coming out soon on New Amsterdam records.

Not a regular solo album but a collaboration with the Spektral quartet and Alex Temple.
    That preview track is stunning!
