    Why 4CDs? I can compile a 3CD best of:
    1) Storia di un minuto
    2) Per un amico
    3) L'isola di niente

I'd rather buy their box set of the original albums...

As usual, this is a 'very best of' from somebody else's pov.
    Pointless.

Not pointless if it helps someone to discover their music.

A lot on discs 3 & 4 I have not heard. Would be interesting to hear, although what I have heard is nowhere near the first 3. Also, with Photos of Ghosts and Promenade the Puzzle especially, the Italian versions I find quite a bit better. Bummer the English versions were selected. Although even the English version of Photos of Ghosts is quite spectacular, particularly the first half. Then there's having both Mr. 9 til 5, a track I never warmed up to, and the instrumental version (Generale) which seems odd. I can't even tell on discs 3 & 4, if any of it is unreleased, not being familiar enough with all of it. I've bought a few albums over the years of 80s on and found them decent enough. But not enough to get them all, unfortunately.

Like most of us, I've got all of Discs 1 and 2, but a nice compilation of 90s and 00s would be welcome. This appears to go all the way to the "classic" album so it might be comprehensive in that regard. Any experts here who would like to chime in regarding the quality on the latter half of the box?

If you haven't followed them post-80s, it's definitely worth having for the tracks from Ulisse, Stati Di Immaginazione, and Serendipity - though perhaps you'd be better off just grabbing those albums, plus Dracula which is a hoot.
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

I probably like 1990's-2000's era PFM more than almost anyone, seeing as my four favorite PFM albums in order are probably Ulisse, Serendipity, Passpartu, and L'Isola di Niente.

This looks like a good compilation to me, though I probably won't get it since it doesn't seem to have any unreleased material. The middle of CD3 will probably scare off a lot of proggers, but there's some great stuff on the end of CD3 and on CD4. But I think it makes for a great compilation, since there are no bands I know of with such diverse and solid material over an almost 50-year career. They have totally reinvented their sound about 10 times over the years, and almost always produce solid material, with much of it desert-island level for me.

It is indeed weird to include English and Italian versions of the same songs ("E Festa" / "Celebration" and "Generale" / "Mr. Nine till Five"), especially when they have so much other material to choose from.

I'd say most of the 1980's and later selections are reasonable, but they unfortunately left off some of the proggier stuff from the more recent output, like "Il Mio Nome e Nessuno" from Ulisse and "La Quieta Che Verra" from Serendipity. But they did include several of my favorite tracks from the post-1975 material, so that's good.

There's nothing from the solid Dracula, and three songs from the not-so-solid Emotional Tattoos, which is a shame.

If you only have a few PFM albums and like them, this would be a great way to own a sampling of their other material. I think only about half of CD3 and maybe a third of CD4 might be "unlistenable" for hardcore proggers. The rest would have to be at least "interesting."

Just for fun, here's how I'd rate all these songs, though I'm not 100-percent sure about a few of the later songs:

^^^ Thanks guys. It does seem like getting the newer CDs one at a time might be a better option than the box.

their first 3 Italian albums are the very best Symph style Prog ever recorded .

no other Symph band comes close for me
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Hmmm...something I agree on. I think the first 3 are brilliant.
