    Tim Hecker

I'm a relative newcomer to his music. I saw him live once at a Kranky Fesitival but remember being somewhat underwhelmed for some reason. It may have been it was so late (shit, it mustav been at least 9:00Pm) and I was already weary and Kranky-ed out from all the preceding acts of the evening.

Anyway, after reading the "A Closer Listen" reveiw site they gave his new one, "Konoyo" high marks so I grabbed that and an early one, "Virgins". Double Wow man!! Love em both. Tim, babe, where have you been all my life.

This is really high level, high quality beatless, atmospheric sounds. Sounds that can't be assimilated in one sitting, or two, or maybe even eight. I've listened to "Virgins" twice now and both times were a completely different experience for me. Very pleasurable to the ears and mind!

Those who know his music, can you give any recommendations on where to go next? Or, even another artist to explore in a similar vein? (I would prefer beat-less right now) I'm enjoying "Konoyo" right now as I type this. Some of this reminds me of Steve Tibbett's more atmospheric dreamy tape loop outings. More please!

    TIA

I've been digging Konoyo over the past few days.

I highly recommend Ravedeath 1972.Money back guarantee

Harmony In Ultraviolet is outstanding, too.

Battema probably has every Tim Hecker release. He should have something to contribute, bless his soul.

Anyhoo....Tim Hecker? Oh yeah, really great. I probably have most of his releases.

I'm only just starting to dive into Konoyo but so far I'm really liking it. For whatever reason, Love Streams hasn't fully grown on me; that said, the companion album that Leyland Kirby released (as V/VM) to play along with it is absolutely bonkers and insane in all the best ways possible (include the BEST COVER EVER): http://www.factmag.com/2016/10/13/le...-love-streams/

I love Harmony in Ultraviolet and Haunt Me Haunt Me Do It Again most of his earlier stuff. And he did a kind of cool collaboration with Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) called the Instrumental Tourist that is pretty excellent if you're a fan of both gents.

Edit: the V/VM disc is apparently long OOP, but this gives you a taste of the epic whackjob that Kirby laid atop Hecker's album. It almost - almost - reminds me of Conrad Schnitzler's piano experiments.

I dont know these people you speak of, but thanks for the launch pad so to speak. BTW, isnt Ben Frost's name uttered in the same breath as Tim Hecker?

edit: Wow, just saw Ben Frost did the music for the Amazon show "Fortitude". Loved that show, creep factor and unease readings off the chart...and I remember the music had alot to do with it.

Ben Frost is involved with Ravedeath, actually...although I'm not 100% sure of the extent of his contributions. He's credited in the liner notes.

Leyland Kirby is one of several aliases that James Kirby uses, and probably is my fave of them. He does ambient/hauntological music that is utterly gorgeous. He also releases music as The Caretaker, which is currently on volume 5 of a six volume series in which his alias succumbs to dementia/Alzheimer's. He uses old records as source material and creates these antique-sounding worlds that are nostalgic and unnerving in equal measures.

Have it, love it, and highly recommend his new companion album Drone Signals, which is very much in the same territory

Oh, since there'll probably be at max 3-4 of us in this particular thread...why not branch out? Not sure if you've heard of this one (I hadn't!) but it's recently reissued and sounds like something that would be very much up your alley

    I'll say, acquired! Thanks John!

BTW, the Chatwin release "Drone Signals" is every bit as excellent as "Staccato Signals". Walt, check em out if you haven't already. Cinematic only scratches the surface.

I'll report back on the Massimo Toniutti release after I preview it.

    I'll check these dudes out.

I'll toss something in the ring....a 2-cd comp of tracks by German sonic surrealists Christoph Heemann and Andreas Martin.Solo, duo tracks and a couple of tracks when these two were in the group H.N.A.S.I give this a whirl every now and then. Some mighty fine stuff here. The 2 cd set should be available at a reasonable price, i hope.I post the Discogs page for this and a track i dig from the comp.

Yeah, I can't quite figure out why Love Streams didn't entirely work for me either. Have given it lots of listens. Virgins on the other hand is a total masterpiece. Looking forward to the new one

Just popping in to add my voice to the pro-Tim Hecker discussion. I enjoyed Love Streams when it came out but have barely given it another thought after the first month with it.

Just to repeat...if you can track down V/VM's accompaniment album, it might boost enjoyment in some perverse way

Hey Walt - This guy was an ex-student of my good pal who teaches music in Mamaroneck, NY (or at least that's what I understood), and this music was just recently performed in NYC. I heard a sample somewhere and it sounded fantastic.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

I only recently was hipped to Minkoff's music(by Doctor Nerve guitarist Nick Didkovsky).I would have loved to see this music live.Hope he performs it again here in Sin City.

Never heard of Tim Hecker before this thread. Listening to "Konoyo" right now on YT. Enjoying it a lot, great background for grading student papers! Will explore further.

I have been a fan of his since I took a chance on his My Love is Rotten to the Core ep years ago. Without a doubt my favorite release of his is Mirages. In fact, it's one of my absolute favorite albums of all-time. Glitchy,stactic-y brilliance from start to finish and one of the most perfect late-night albums I've ever heard. Though quite good and enjoyable, his last couple of releases haven't bowled me over. I haven't picked up Konoyo yet but intend to shortly, seems to be getting great reviews. If you like what you've heard from him, you really can't go wrong with any of his stuff. It's been cool seeing him get more and more recognition the past few years and glad to see him noticed on PE

Re: My Love is Rotten to the Core. It's an interesting, amusing manipulation/mashup of various bits of Van Halen dialog and VH songs. You may recognize the title is a line from "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love".

I wanted to do a quick reply to this one because happily, it's a winner!

Here is part of the blurb...

Toniutti weaves a loose net of distant clanks, dull thuds, metallic resonance, and skittering percussive sounds, allowing the sounds to breathe against a backdrop of near-silent atmosphere. Although the haunted ambience recalls the work of contemporaries like Organum, Toniutti generally steers clear of long tones and drones, preferring to arrange brief, sometimes staccato sonic objects into patterns of repeating figures and isolated events whose overall compositional shape remains somehow ungraspable. Although glimpses of recognizable location recordings and instrumental sounds can occasionally be made out, for most of the record the sources of the sounds you hear remain teasingly mysterious, an abstracted memory of everyday actions and atmospheres.

The first half sounds like the early sound experiments of P Schaeffer in the acousmatic space and I was surprised it was recorded in the late 80's early 90's. The second 40 minutes though, while similar, is in much better sound. If you have seen the movie "Under the Skin" with Scarlett Johansson, this music could have been the soundtrack to the bits when she lures her unsuspecting victims into the black liquid and the subsequent dead, stark silence and eventual deconstruction of the body. This was one of the wildest scenes I've ever seen in cinema and I'm happy to say that Toniutti recreated it in all it's weirdness.

    Great find...great listening experience.

Pretty sure i started a thread about this album a while ago, to little or no response.May as well throw it in here, just for fun.Henry Gwiazda, the album is "Not Notes Not Rhythms".Samples, musique concrete, a little guitar from Henry, all crafted in a fun, approachable yet totally serious recording.I love the animal sounds he mixes in.
