    Dead Can Dance

Fortune presents gifts not according to the book....

I'm probably preaching to the converted here, but if you haven't heard Dead Can Dance, and are wondering what they're all about, then perhaps my bluffer's guide will shed some light.

And you may even be surprised to discover that there are two widely used pieces of music you've heard before but didn't realise who the artists were.

Thanks for the link and for the guide. I'm already converted, although I don't go back often to DCD these days, but I liked your text.

I agree with you on the fact that DCD's music "has a timeless appeal to it that (…) transcends the more mainstream variations that are ubiquitous across film scores and television documentaries." They managed to create some musical syncretism that doesn't feel cheap or superficial to my ears, despite the sometimes "ponderous and clumsy" nature of Perry's lyrics and phrasings, to quote your words.

My introduction to DCD was the release of Aion in 1990. I think I bought it from a recommendation to try a 4AD artist. I was blown away.....considering what was up for offer in that era of music. It was hard to get their output back then and I had to hit independent record shops that dealt in Special Orders. Followed each new release after that.
My greatest regret?.....DCD played Seattle....I bought tickets MONTHS in advance. The night of the concert. I was sitting in my chair wondering Why the date was important.....About 1 hour after the concert started, I remembered.......$#i+! The venue was an hour away.....It was the last time they toured......
You are right about the timelessness of their music.....DCD is Still in my playlists 30+ years on.

Apparently they have a new album in the can. Which likely means a fresh round of touring.

I saw them twice and they were pretty phenomenal both times. Hope you get a second chance to see 'em this time!
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Although I'd heard the gothic rock of their earlier albums (and didn't care for it), I also became (much) more aware of their stuff with Aion and its medieval forays.
And it struck me hard too. That's definitely a personal t00 album.
Buuuut, TBH, Serpent and their later albums never did much for me either... and their near-new-agey stuff bores me
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Although I had been aware of them for some time, it was the live album Toward The Within that finally grabbed me. I really like them.

I'd love to see them live, got a few of their albums, lovely atmospheric stuff, the vocals really fit the ambiance of the music.

Aion is great. The Sperent's Egg gets more overall spins by me, though.

I don't have time at present to get into it, but I agree that they were/are a great band.

So...fun bit: many moons ago there was a pretty great 2 CD compilation called The Lotus Eaters: A Tribute to Dead Can Dance.

There were quite a few excellent performances: Ulver, Anathema (in various alt guises including Antimatter and Daniel directly), The Gathering, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Jarboe of Swans, and Subterranean Masquerade alongside some lesser-known acts and at least one total dud of complete asshats who still had their original singer and guitarist. As tributes go, I always thought this was a pretty good one (I'd have paid full price just for the Ulver version of 'In the Kingdom on the Blind'):

Amazing band - saw them live in Moscow during the Anastasis tour, have most of their albums on CDs. Started to listen to them relatively late, in 1996, after Spiritchaser went out, that was the first album that I listened to. But "Within the Realm..." is by far my favourite one.

Does anybody here own their SACD box? It would be interesting to know how much more superior is the sound there comparing to the CD versions...

I like them. I think I discovered them through a Dutch television-show. Within the realm of a dying sun was my first. I stopped after Aion. Some years ago I decided to add some stuff to my collection.
Funny story, a friend of mine played something for me and when hearing the first note I said: "Dead Can Dance".
