Thread: Covers that surpass the original *masterpieces*

OK, this version of a Beatles song makes me think twice:

Oooops, wrote too soon, can't find it on youtube It is Not A Second Time. It is a great fitting choice by Terje Rypdal. The whole album is a jazz guitar tribute to the Beatles, there were two volumes at my day. Toots Thielemans makes an appearance too

Or as I call it, "Hey Eric! Follow the bouncing 1 !"

Like The Beatles I have yet to hear a Triana's cover that surpasses the original, but I keep trying

    Here's a most interesting one:

I haven't heard a Beatles cover that is better than the original either. I hate most of them. I can accept covers that don't try to copy their style and make it something completely different. I especially like the two albums of classical guitar arrangements by the Swedish guitarist Göran Söllcher. There is also a couple of tribute albums by different guitarists that has some great tracks, Come Together: Guitar Tribute To The Beatles.

    Disagree somewhat strongly

One of my fave Beatles tune is Eleanor Rigby, but I've heard many versions that are at least as good as the original, and a few that are even better.

But then again, I've never considered the fab-four sacred, unlike many (didn't say you were one of them)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I just heard this on the radio this morning, while i really respect the guys in Toto i've never been a fan. I've always like this goofy little Weezer tune but i have to say i think Toto one ups it pretty good.

I'll go on record and say i like Weezer's version of Africa better

Liked Springsteen as a writer but not as a performer. Much prefer the Manfred Mann versions (sort of prog).

S&G's "America" by Yes, as already mentioned.

When it comes to Johnny Cash, everyone thinks of "Hurt." But I was blown away by his cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage."

Yes. Also his covers of Dylan ("The Mighty Quinn", "Father of Day, Father of Night"), Marley ("Redemption Song") and Sting ("Demolition Man"), among others...

Much truer to the basic structure of the original, though, than the smoothed-out Doors arrangement. (The Doors also consciously left out the verse about dollars.)
