I am big Carla Bley fan, but there are several of her albums that I have never listened to. From the ones I know and love, I’d strongly recommend Tropic Appetites. For me, this is the album that better captures her essence: quirk humor, great tunes, excellent playing (Gato Barbieri is in great shape here), and good balance between tradition and forward-looking jazz composition. Got mine from Wayside many years ago and never looked back.

    Nice interview here.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

Paul Bley seemed to have an affinity for Carla and Annette Peacock's compositions, and was not a prolific composer himself as far as I know, so he played their pieces a lot.

Another Paul Bley record I like is a double LP titled Copenhagen and Haarlem of live trio recordings from the 60's that Arista/Freedom released a decade later. I don't know if it's on CD (not in that configuration).

I'm pretty fond of Steve Swallow's "Home - Music By Steve Swallow To Poems By Robert Creeley". It features Bob Moses, Steve Kuhn, Dave Liebman, Lyle Mays and Sheila Jordan.

PS- was supposed to see Carla's quartet a few days ago in Berlin, but alas the tour was cancelled due to health reasons, apparently its the first ever tour that Carla cancelled in her life, I do hope she is doing well by now...

^+1, and I didn't see this mentioned but Mike Mantler- Silence is one of my favourites, with Robert Wyatt, Carla Bley, Kevin Coyne all on board, you really can't go wrong...

    Definetely Carla Bley: Tropic Appetites

Condensed Escalator, but whithout Bruce, McLaughlin and the indian incense.
I spin it far more often than Escalator.

Michael Mantler's Movies/More Movies should not be missed. All instrumental music with stellar players (Tony Williams, Steve Swallow, Gary Windo, Philip Catherine, Lary Coryell, Carla Bley etc.). Strongly recommended for those who like The Hapless Child.

    Roger Trigaux’s favorite is Escalator
After we finished recording Souls For sale (that has a sample of Escalator) he told me he wanted to send Carla score heh heh imagine that

This thread caused me to go back and look at some of the things I have by Michael Mantler (now I need to listen to them again). I was reminded how frequently he worked with all-stars like Jack Bruce, Robert Wyatt, Nick Mason and Don Preston, etc. I think I've got one with Terje Rypdal on it too.

Didn't Carla Bley have a daughter who is a musician, too?

Yeah, Karen Mantler. Any recommendations there?

If you like Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports, you'll probably like the Cat Arnold albums--they're sort of in that vein.

Even though she wears her hair the same was as her mother(!), she seems to be quite a bit more lighthearted.

She doesn't wear her hair that way any more.

I have spoken to Karen on the phone. She when she speaks, she sounds exactly like Carla....
