Max Richter - anyone?

Watched a recent interview with Steven Wilson on YouTube and he did a "what's in my bag" episode on Amoeba. It's quite a fun episode should any of you want to check it out.

Anyway, he mentioned he's been spinning Max Richter's "Voices" record lately. I checked it out and it's quite a stunning piece of work. If you're into atmospheric instrumental music involving string sections, piano, and woodwinds, he's paints a beautiful picture through his work.

The "Voices" record is two discs, the first being the whole thing with spoken word over it. The second disc is the "music only", which is what I've been spinning a lot lately. Sounds really beautiful on the 180 gram vinyl edition.

Curious if anyone else on here happen to be a fan of his? Any recommendations where to go next?

He reminds me a lot of Craig Armstrong, another minimalist instrumentalist. He's more famous for his movie scoring, but he has some amazing solo records....

Max Richter is outstanding. I've been a huge fan since the first episode of The Leftovers aired and I was enthralled by his score. Voices is excellent, though I much prefer the voiceless version.

Yeah, I'm definitely a fan. Discovered him, Johann Johannsson and a few other modern composers at the same time, around 2009 or so before they became popular on the soundtrack circuit. Saw him as part of a panel at Big Ears too, if memory serves.

Fun fact...while Johannsson did the overall score for the (IMHO brilliant) film, Arrival the beautiful and melancholy piece that bookends the film is actually one of Richter's, "On the Nature of Daylight."



Voices is indeed lovely, although I also prefer the instrumental version.

I really like Sleep If you are into epic pieces, this one is 8hrs 24minutes. There is also the abridged From Sleep which has different versions of some of the same material.

I learned his music when someone at the old Mick Karn-forum recommended him. The first album I bought was The Blue Notebook:



Retrospective is a fine 4-CD boxset, collecting some of his work.

When I started watching The Leftovers I did know Richter's work, but didn't know he had done the soundtrack. It got me into the story right away; very emotional! I believe some of the pieces come from existing albums.

Someone who is certainly influenced by Richter is Ryan Vail as can be heard on his second album For Every Silence.

I was fortunate to see Max Richter + ACME + Grace Davidson (soprano) in Chicago October 2019. Yep, one of the last batch of live shows I saw before the shutdown. Program was in two parts: 1) selections from The Leftovers & 2) Sleep. Sublime and austere. And I did not sleep.

I knew Max Richter mainly through his soundtracks, but it's only recently that I listened to his studio records....I like especially 'The Blue Notebooks' from 04 with the Kafka Extras read by Tilda Swinton and 'Songs from Before' with Robert Wyatt reading Murakami...I regret to have missed the allnight in concert Sleep experience at the Paris Philharmonie where you had a bed and could actually sleep through parts of the "concert"

I have The Blue Notebooks and From Sleep on cd. Steven Wilson got me interested too and the film Arrival which has The Nature of Daylight as its main theme if I remember right. Sleep is interesting because it seems to defy active listening and causes your brain to get distracted and therefore sleep...
