Rarely-mentioned New Wave band with some really strong song-writing. Of course none of their stuff has ever been released on CD, to my knowledge. Any other fans here?

Yes, love this band. Their album Party is a must have. It will be re-released on lp within months including a CD with the album plus live recordings. This LP is limited to 500 copies

My sister got a bunch of free records when she was a teenager (I think they were all cutout/promo releases). I remember she and her heavy-metal loving friend defaced the covers with laundry marker. One of them was this LP. I gave it a chance, and found it to be a pretty cool and quirky new wave release, with a heavy Talking Heads influence. I can’t remember the name of the song, but the one that stuck in my head was the one whose lyrics were instructions for cutting out a broken heart from a piece of paper (EDIT: the song in question is called “To Assemble”). I know the Tapes had an earlier LP, but I’ve never heard it.

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
Really digging that first tune there called "into Action", nice ska vibe! I would spin these guys if that disc became available.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.
"And it's only the giving
That makes you what you are" - Ian Anderson
I would say it's "progressive" but not "prog-rock."
Discography:
- You Just Can't Sleep (1978) - I finally tracked down the LP and hated it
- Party (1980) - a stone cold classic if you asked me. Some Talking Heads influence but really they're unlike anyone else
- On A Clear Day (1981) - Another very good album, though some tracks went on too long in unproductive directions IMO
- Live on a Clear Day (2012) - Apparently The Tapes reunited (for one concert?) on April 7, 2012 (YT videos online) and released this EP as a gift to attendees? Recorded live in 1981

^ Dr. JKL has a point. Give it up.
You’re right of course. I shouldn’t try to bring up anything progressive in an All-YES All-The-Time forum, where it’s always 1971.
At the center of the universe is a singularity that swallows all music forums whole. There is no escaping. The singularity is called Yes.
