It's not entirely psychological, IMO. If Martin Barre isn't there, it's not Jethro Tull. He made creative contributions to the music, and he has his own sound. Ian Anderson has clearly made this distinction himself, as he has released several solo albums over the last 30 years - some of which sound similar to the music of Jethro Tull - the common thread being that Martin Barre didn't contribute anything to them.
As far as these new releases go, I don't personally have any interest in Steve Wilson's messing around with recordings that already sound fine, unless there's material on them that has not previously been released.
