Tarkus turns 47 today (June 14)

Rachel Flowers just released her cover from ProgStock 2017 to celebrate the anniversary.

Forty-seven years ago today, Tarkus erupted upon an unsuspecting world. The Emerson, Lake & Palmer epic stands just as relevant today as on the day of its release, with its musical and contextual themes depicting the futility of conflict. When an enthusiastic audience at ProgStock 2017 urged Rachel to perform the 20 minute tour de force, Rachel eagerly stepped up to the challenge. Later she was heard to say, "That was fun!"

^The two joke songs aside, Side 2 is fine. The suite does rather dominate the album, though.

I actually tend to favour the Welcome Back... version of the title suite these days. 'Aquatarkus' within that performance showcases the band at something of a peak, totally in synch with each other.

I am tone deaf then. Side One = fabulous! Happy birthday to Tarkus and cheers to the memory of Emerson & Lake.

Wonderful stuff! I saw the band 10 days earlier on 6/4 at the Loew's Theater in Providence. Greg introduced the suite, pointing to the Tarkus painted on one of Carl's bass drums. The performance was stunning. Bought the album 10 days later.

I refuse to do so, based on my musical beliefs.

Apparently, so am I. "Jeremy Bender" and "Are You Ready, Eddie" make me wish I were literally deaf. Otherwise, a terrific LP.

AquaTarkus. One of the 70's great hidden sweet spots.

Perhaps finding the happy medium is harder than we know.

Lake at his peak for me is the vocal on Infinite Space. Just stunning.

You are correct, sir. Just checked my list (I used to keep a list of every band I saw with dates) and 5/4/71 it is.

I only wish the synth didn't sound like a quacking duck on this. It's always spoiled my enjoyment somewhat.

Really??? That was supposed to be a time signature joke. The first part of "Tarkus" is in 5/4.

It doesn't on Welcome Back. I think that 1974 live version, although perhaps played a little too fast, is a more assured performance.

These alleged 'comedy songs' were often the weak points on ELP albums. The only one I can stomach is 'The Sheriff' which had more effort put it into it. '...Eddie' is far more gruesome than Iron Maiden's mascot of the same name.

    Right. It's more ... liquid ...

    lol

With regard to the tempo, you may be right. But they were such showoffs back then ...

...and the pace may help the thing as well; AquaTarkus was always my favorite thing on Welcome Back.
