    Magma Zess

I just saw on the Wayside update, that magma is finally releasing Zess? Doesn't that mean it is going to be the last album?

No way to know for sure pending any comment from CV or SV, but I suspect that the days of the band are numbered. It has been 50 years already.

Magma will play as long as Vander can sit and drum.

You never know (Hiseman) but I saw Magma earlier this year, and there was no signs of fatigue.

They certainly said they were taking 2918 (more or less) off and would do a 50th anniversary tour next year coinciding with the new album.

It isn't on the site, it was in the weekly newsletter in the 'Coming Soon(ish)' section.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

^ Apart from the reunion to celebrate Eno's 1701st birthday.

I hope it's an archive recording from 1979 or 1980 (but 1981 or 1982 will do) but I'm not sure I would want a new recording by the new band. Sounds bad, but for this tune the passion, energy and power can't be duplicated in 2018. As much as I enjoy Magma today and have seen them a few years ago, Zess is simply a track from another time and place in history which isn't the type of music that can be played with the intensity that it deserves by the current band. IMHO.

I did really mean 2919 - not a «*I am typing this on a bus*» kind of thing. Hopefully they’ll be back on Kobaia by then.

MagmaShark- Zess is being recorded right now, with Morgen Agren sitting in on drums.

wow - in addition to Vander or is it just Agren?

Zess is my favorite preformance from the DVD series
    There Paganoti was drumming

What is the reason CV is not drumming?
    Because he is singing?
I would understand why it would be an issue in live settings, but in the studio?

It's not an 'issue', but it's obviously what he wants. Maybe he wants to sing live with live drumming?

would be sad if this was truly the last album but they've kind of been on borrowed time for a while, so I'm just glad they got it all down in the studio

It won't be the same without CV behind the kit, so in that way I'm a little sad.

However, Agren is a monster musician and it will be very cool to hear him playing with Magma -- a team-up I never even imagined, but one full of possibilities.

Well, it's never been the same, then, since I'm not aware that CV has ever drummed on that piece - it was always done with Christian singing and another guy drumming, whether Alain Weiss, Antoine Paganotti or whoever was the second drummer. Pierre Moerlen may even have played it during his short stint in 1981.

Wow, Agren and Vander would be both in my Top 10 Drummer list. Looking forward to hearing this.

Moerlin with Magma?! Shit, I'd sure like to have heard that one!

I am utterly guttered with the prospect of this being Magma's final album. I dream of watching Christian Vander 90 years old, with diapers and unable to control his own drooling, giving it another go at the Kohntarkosz - just to prove that I am never getting old, and certainly never going to die.

At least one boot claims to have Moerlen on it, but it has never been ascertained. The sound isn't that good, and what Magma drummers were required to do at the time (ca. Bobino 1981) was in a limited range and didn't call on individuality and originality.

Daniel Denis was also briefly a member ca. May 1972, but that I believe remains unrecorded. Would be nice to hear him play "MDK" (which it seems was all he played at those shows - to allow Vander to concentrate on singing).

Still Pierre was one of the great ones, and a little (even if very little) Gong spice in Magma (long after Moze) seems to be very promising.

But Paganotti fits the bill perfectly here

Mats / Morgan was support for Magma in 2016 in Helsingborg, and Morgan made an interview with Vander in 2002

A recording of MDK at l'Olympia with Daniel Denis (7 may 1972) does exist but - surprise surprise - is not available to the lambda members of the "race maudite".
