Roger Hodgson - 2018 World Tour

Roger Hodgson - 2018 World Tour starts June 12

Cities and dates on front page of his website http://www.rogerhodgson.com/index.html

tour looks pretty substantial Europe, US, Canada

Anyone going to see this? I've never seen Supertramp and would love this opportunity. It's a pity a reunion tour with Rick Davies never could happen. It would have been a dream to see them perform all those songs together and as a special treat also play their two best post Supertramp songs: "Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy)" and "Brother Where You Bound".

He's played for years in St Louis, selling out 2 casino shows every year it seems. For some reason I never pulled the trigger on seeing him even though I love Supertramp, but I will this year.
I thought he was popular in StL, but it looks like he really must be loved in that other Beer City--4 shows in Milwaukee! Drink a Schitz for us Roger!

My wife and I were at Epcot Center in Florida maybe 15 years ago* and stumbled upon a Hodgson show just as it was starting. He had a single musician (on various instruments, including sax) accompanying him. We enjoyed what was clearly a nostalgia show geared for a casual audience, but for years afterwards we could break each other up by repeating the billing headline that was repeated over and over again all over the park: "Roger Hodgson... FORMERLY OF SUPERTRAMP!"

*It was 2010, actually, and here's an amateur video of that very show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x1q5W0JciI

If you haven't seen him, definitely go!

I've seen him twice in the last few years. The shows are always really good and fun, with some criticism that his set list is pretty much the same all the time. Which has made his band sound very clinical over the years. There's just no spontaneity. But, if you haven't seen him, his voice is still amazingly great and the set is very good including Fools Overture. It's a great night out to hear those tunes played live.

Fools Overture is worth the price of admission almost by itself. Glad to hear he still plays that epic.

i saw him solo in 1998 just as he resumed touring again after that long lay-off. in a small club in hamburg, entirely on his own. three instruments (guitar, piano, harmonium) and THAT voice, albeit suffering a bad cold. SUPERTRAMP’s glossy cinemascope prog pop became condensed to the very essence before my ears and eyes (no slight on rick davis and his own grand skills and ambitions. i hope he is keeping well, incidentally). “it’s raining again” almost became a hymn at a much slow pace and played on that plaintive harmonium (pump organ) that he brought along. a magical night before an overseeable but the more appreciative audience.

good to see him having such global success with his supertramp-redux show. the songs speak for themselves and will remain untouchable.

I would love to see him, but he's not anywhere near my area. The only chance I had to see Supertramp was in '83. They disbanded the day of the show and I never got to see them. Bastards!

I first saw Supertramp on their 1979 Tour of Breakfast in America, with Jean Luc Ponty backing up. It was a fantastic show! I have tickets to see Roger in Ottawa in October with very nice seats. I saw Rick Davies' Supertramp about 6 years ago. I know Supertramp had plans to tour a few years ago but it was cancelled due to Rick's health. Does anyone know about the status of the band now? They put on a very decent show. I can't imagine how powerful a show Supertramp would deliver if Rick and Rodger reunited (however extremely unlikely or impossible that may be).

I couldn't find any updates on Davies since that diagnosis of multiple myeloma in 2015. No updates to website since then.

But yes - can you imagine a show now combing all these songs: Roger Hodgson / Rick Davies Song List PLUS "Had a Dream" and "Cannonball"

I had assumed they had been in the HoF some time ago and was looking to see if they performed together at the ceremony but it doesn't look like they have even been inducted yet - guess I shouldn't be surprised but it does boggle the mind.

I love Cannonball. Maybe the best 80s prog tune? The recording is so pristine too.

Would love to see this tour but they are coming nowhere near me. Roger's solo work and late Supertramp songs didn't do much for me, but he sounds terrific on those classics.

In the Eye of the Storm was really good. Didn't care much for Hai Hai. 2000's Open the Door I haven't heard but it seems like it got pretty favorable reviews with some saying it was very close to classic Supertramp. Anyone here heard it? (i've just listened to a couple on yt "Along Came Mary" and "Open the Door" - both songs really good - I think I need to get this album)

It does seem odd that those 3 albums are all we have from Roger post Supertramp. I would have guessed he would be more prolific.

Saw them twice in the late 70's, twice with Davies at the helm and seen twice Hodgson solo (including that RTBF solo broadcast)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I didn't like Hai Hai very much either, but Eye of the Storm was great. It is kind of disappointing that he hasn't produced more music since then, as I really like his writing and singing.

who does Roger have in his touring band? With Supertramp (official) on indefinite hiatus wonder if he could make an offer to Helliwell, Siebenberg and Dougie Thomson.
Basically take over the band in everything but name.

i really hope Rick's health is okay - not sure why there is no information on the web. The only hope for a Supertramp reunion was dashed when Rick didn't agree to Roger's intention to reunite in 2010 during their 40th Anniversary Tour. It's also too bad that there was no Supertramp album to match Brother Where You Bound (which was a very strong follow-up their heyday).

He put out Open the Door in 2000.

But $100 for tickets in Milwaukee? Who does he think he is, ARW?!

I know. But, he does 4 back-to-back shows nearly every year there, with orchestra, and they always sell out.

He also put out a live album, Rites of Passage, which has a bunch of previously unreleased tunes.

One of the main reasons he gives for leaving Supertramp in the first place is that he wanted to raise a family, and that such an endeavor, for him, was at that point incompatible with life on the road. He may also have felt that he'd more or less said all that he'd wanted or needed to say musically. Perhaps anything above and beyond that would have been fun but ultimately inconsequential. That appears to have been the case considering what he's done since his resurgence: Ringo Starr's All Star Band and some solo tours, both of which focus almost exclusively on his Supertramp-era material. Personally, I'd love to see him live if there were ever the possibility. Based on what's on YouTube, he still sings very, very well, and he comes across as being extremely grateful for his successes.

no new album with all of the back catalog of songs Roger claims to have.
he keeps blocking any Supertramp video that surfaces on YouTube.
so many years wasted and he has no clue the betrayal he's brought upon the band and their fans.
he's selfish and self centered and i wouldn't waste a penny to go into his pocket.

Not that Davies was much more productive

I believe either Thompson or Helliwell already play (or have played for a while) in his band

Yup, even by compiling the best tracks from the following three albums, it still wouldn't come up to Brother's knee-height.

Well, I'd say all five probably wanted to build a family, so that's not really a reason. Of course Roger might have wanted to be really close by his family, but his two solo albums match Davies' two Supertramp album: both first shots are very good, both second effort are really bad.
I don't know how many tours either side did during the 80's, but neither side was very busy in the 90's and 00's.

Mmmmhhh!!!... Doubt Mrs Davies would act different. She appears to be the Yoko in that story.

Not sure I'd call Roger selfish, but he does seem over-sensitive about what pushed him (or drove himself) out of the band

This is true. I filmed a couple songs the last time he rolled through, and they were taken down from Youtube within 2 days.

I too find him selfish, but I don't take it personally. I don't find him to be a jerk... he just for whatever reason doesn't want to unit with the Supertramp guys. While I admit that rubs me wrong, because he should do it just one last time.... but who knows, maybe there's something personal about the relationship we're not privy too. I have enjoyed his shows quit a bit, and might see him again if the time/price was right.
