An article about what music genres are hot in streaming

The article avoids the nasty questions of who wins ( gets paid ), just focuses on what gets played.
(spoiler, Prog is not mentioned )
Sort of topical with the Spotify IPO today and all that sort of stuff.

what genres have benefited the most from the streaming era of music

It’s getting to the point where a person can’t survive on rhyming alone.

I had to look up trap. Sorry that I did. A sound that I associate with loud car stereos.

Prog is a sub-sub-sub genre of rock and rock is a loser.

So, one could infer that prog is a loser-loser or a loser-loser-loser.

    you're welcome.

P.S. I am in 'the business' and I had to look up trap as well....

there's also "prog metal" and metal was a winner

metal is the monkey wrench in everything. hard copy sales are down except in metal. metal is obscure but gets a lot of streaming and has extremely dedicated fans. metal is angry but its fans are the happiest. metal is like making a theory on stars and then finding it and cursing it for not following the theory...

which puts it under metal, not rock. Is my best guess.

Despite being presented as a quantitative comparison of music genres, I found the article very to be a very vague and confusing what's-hot-what's-not piece. Treating rock and metal as segregated entities should provide a clue that this hasn't been thought through. Everything else I've read about young music service users has pointed out that they don't have the kind of "Disco Sucks" genre loyalties that prevailed during the big label/big radio era.

streaming services other than YouTube, Bandcamp, Soundcloud in a better world, would die.

Spotify pays the artist next to nothing, yet their CEO is a billionaire.

Music Modernization Act? the problem this may have even if it could help artists out, is it may never pass since it requires not only the House and Senate but the lunatic in the Whitehouse to sign it.
